Talking New Palm Treo 700p (Palm OS) with EV-DO

Earlier this year, Palm released a Treo 700w which had EV-DO. However, being a diehard Palm OS fan plus depend on programs that only ran on Palm OS, I kept my Treo 650.....However, now Palm has released a Palm OS version of the Treo 700 which has 128MB, which has 60MB user available (still non-volitile memory) and supports SD 2GB and above....but with EV-DO, now you can surf the web at broadband speed!

More memory and EV-DO and it will be available on both the Sprint & Verizon network.

The Treo "Hollywood" also look interesting. It's an updated version of the Treo 700w (Windows PPC) and doesn't have that goofy protruding antenna.

I FEEL LIKE A KID WAITING ON CHRISTMAS TO OPEN MY GIFTS!! I promise you that I will be the first person in line to get my 700P. I have been using my 650 since it came out in 04 and love it almost as much as my X5...well....almost. Im on a Sprint retention plan that includes 750 anytime minutes, unlimited internet, unlimited text, unlimited everything, all for less than 50 bucks a month (including taxes). I guess it also helps that I get a military discount. The EVDO will be lovely, especially when using PDAnet! Im wonder with the upgrade will we be able to finally use our Blue tooth to voice dial?

From Engadget....

Update: Interesting info. Phone Scoop called to let us know a few hurtful details about the 700p. First, their SDIO slot won't support WiFi (which is like, half the point). PalmAddict quotes Palm's Michelle White as saying that the lack of WiFi is justified by the fact that the phone supports EV-DO. The 700p also does not support voice dialing over Bluetooth, nor does it officially support SD cards over 2GB. However it does come with a basic version of PocketTunes -- but lacks PlaysForSure support. D'oh indeed.

SilvX5,

The Treo 700p for now is being released for only Sprint and Verizon. EV-DO is only available on CDMA network which is what Sprint and Verizon uses. There has not been any talk about a GSM version.

There are no SIM cards in CDMA phones.

When you refer to "unlock version", you are referring to GSM phones (e.g. Cingular, T-Mobile, etc.)

GSM also has a hi-speed data network, but apparently not as robust as CDMA's EV-DO (which allows one to surf the internet wirelessly at broadband speed).

but Cingular etc does have 3G/UMTS which is equivalent to Verizon/Sprint EVDO in speed. Problem is it hasn't rolled out everywhere yet but robustness is vague. To me, not having wifi ability is unacceptable though. I am still loving my Cingular 8125/HTZ wizard. It runs even better now after overclocking with the omapclock utility. Runs stable at 240mhz. being on WM5 platform makes it extremely hackable.

The data transfer speed is a little bit misleading with these devices. The limiting factor for most of these phones is the processor power and operating system/web browsing software, not the data transfer speed.

For example, I have a Nokia 9300 on Cingular while my friend has a Verizon Treo 700W. When we are in an area where he gets EVDO reception (400-700 kbps) and I get EDGE reception (150-175 kbps), I can load most web pages quite a bit quicker than he can. His phone seems to stall on any kind of javascript or flash content, while my phone just loads the page nice and smoothly. So unless you are downloading large file attachments on your phone, don't get too happy over EVDO -- you may be disappointed. Most likely the 700P is only going to load web pages a tiny bit faster than the 650. It all depends on the operating system and if Palm improved the super-slow Blazer browser.

Same thing applies to this. In Europe, they came out with the Nokia 9300i which is the same as the 9300 that Cingular sells, except it adds Wi-Fi. Everyone in the Symbian forum was so excited until they used it and noticed that web pages barely load faster. Because the bottleneck is not the speed, but the processing power and the browser.

I tried out the 8125 for a few days, and using Wi-Fi the speed of loading a web page was only a tiny bit faster than using the Cingular EDGE network. A 200-300 MHz processor can only do so much. Try taking an old first generation Pentium desktop with Windows 95 and hooking it up to a Cable Modem, and see how fast web pages load....you'll see what I'm talking about.
