WTF, apparently schools have to say sorry for freedom of speech?

Two highschool seniors in New York posted quotes from Hitler's Mein Kampf under their pictures in the yearbook. Neither of the quotes are offensive in language or context yet the school rushed out to say sorry for not blocking it....

Apparently in a rush to forget the past we are attempting to block the future...

The quotes are solid IMO and if I hadn't been told "..eww look what Hitler said" I wouldn't have known....

http://www.cnn.com/2006/EDUCATION/06....ap/index.html

---

Now without knowing who said them, how are the following in any way offensive??

The quotes were picked by Christopher Koulermos and Philip Compton, both 18. Koulermos' read "Strength lies not in defense, but in attack." Compton chose "The great masses of people ... will more easily fall victims to a big lie than to a small one."

Apparently the whole USA wears panties

Why would the school even apologize? They are harmless quotes that 99% of the people would have never even realized where they came from if nobody said anything. So what if they quote Hitler, Stalin, Jesse Jackson or Clinton. WTF is the difference? We have a freedom of speech in this country and if people get offended piss on them. The ACLU and the liberals need to have such a perfectly "politically correct" society that people must refrain from even quoting a person now? It's B.S. What if they would have quoted Ghengas Khan or someone else who was maybe responsible for more deaths than Hitler? Would there have been an uproar?

What are you talking about? The ACLU would be the first group in line to fight for the rights of these students to quote whoever they want.

As far as those quotes being from Hitler, they sound exactly like Hitler to me. It scares me that it is not obvious to most people, especially the second quote. But I guess I should not be surprised. More and more of Hitler's political ideas are finding their way into the mainstream in the United States the last few years. (notice I said "political")

The second quotes sounds more like Winston Churchill to me then Hitler.

And the first quote sounds like something that would come out of any field generals mouth...IMO.

hmm that kinda sucks, I remember I used to have an "equals" sign on my M3in High school and apparently it "offended" the AGAPE club, who protested, they demanded I remove it, once I threatened to sue for sexual orientation harrassment they backed down, but I think its total BS, but I must wonder what they were hoping to accomplish by using those quotes?

As I said, these sort of ideas are becomming mainstream in Washington these days. I could post entire speeches by Hitler, and if I removed the names of the specific countries and leaders which would give it away, you would probably guess the speech came from Bush, or Rumsfeld or someone in our Federal Government. The whole "war on terror" is an idea taken from the Nazis. These kids probably throught the quotes were cool. They definately do fit in with today's politics.

"The great masses of people ... will more easily fall victims to a big lie than to a small one." - Hitler

This quote is used in the pc game Civilization IV (Probably one of the most popular franchises in gaming-history), and noone (AFAIK) complained one bit. The game probably sold 2+ million copies - so there has been plenty of opportunity and exposure. How these kids got everyones panties in a knot is beyond me - surely there is more serious stuff going on at the schools?

(edited for spelling)

Isn't the end goal of that game to take over the world??

Interestingly enough, this quote definately applies to the discussion going on in the Ann Coulter-9/11 thread.
