Restaurants in NY & DC

Hey, I am heading out to New York and Washington DC next week to give my kids their civic lessons (whatever I can remember ) Was wondering if anyone has good restaurant recommendations. I will be traveling with my wife, 2 teenagers and a 9 year old, so family restaurants would be best. We enjoy all kind of food, as long as it it not too spicy. we prefer local favors rather than chain restaurants. Any favorites out there and any restaurants we should not miss? TIA.

I can help you with DC, but need to know what part of the area are you staying, downtown DC, MD or VA suburbs? Will you be driving or taking local transportation?

i can do the same for NYC, where are you staying and what kind of food do you want? you can eat in a different restaurant every night for a year in NYC and never eat at the same place twice (if you count the # of zagat rated places)

Thanks guys. In DC, I am going to be close to the White House and Manhattan in NYC. I have a car for half the trip and on public transit the other half. I am not that picky about food, American, French, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese are all good. Something interesting and different that I cannot find else where in the country would be perfect. There are always so many choices when I travel that I find recommendations are better than looking in the phone book or on the web. Thanks again.

As for the DC area, there are plenty of places and the price range varies. Here's some of my favorites:

Raku (moderately priced Asian, excellent Sushi), Dupont Circle, DC
Cashion's Eat Place (expensive American), Adams Morgan, DC
DC Coast (expensive American), downtown DC
Jaleo (moderate Spanish), downtown DC
Kinkead's (expensive seafood), Foggy Bottom, DC
Pizzeria Paradiso (cheap Italian), Dupont Circle, DC
Rosa Mexicana (moderate Mexican), downtown DC
Mandalay (cheap Burmese), Silver Spring, MD
Cuba de Ayer (cheap Cuban), Silver Spring, MD
A&J (cheap Chinese, good dim sum), Rockville, MD
Peking Gourmet (moderate Chinese, BEST Peking Duck!!!), Falls Church, VA
Ledo's (cheap pizza) many area locations
Timbuktu (moderate seafood, excellent crab cakes), Hanover, MD

You need to narrow it down for NYC, "Manhattan" is the entire island.

Sorry guys. The CEO makes all the hotel accomodations, so had to check with her. I just show up and pay, I mean play We are actually going to be staying in Alexandria when we are in DC and around 52nd Avenue when in Manhattan. Thanks for the list, I will check them out! Not really any budget in mind, food is one of my passions, so spending for good food is not a problem.

Raku is GREAT for Thai but be warned about slow and impersonal service.
DC Coast may be not so great with the kids but super nice place still.
Jaleo, again so good but racks up in price with the multiple dishes. PS, try the shark there if you go.
Rosa - not my fave place, $5 for chips and salsa? I think no.

Also near by is Old Ebbits Grill. Great american/seafood place. Try the fried brie aps. They also own Clydes, yes its a chain but you can always find good stuff to eat and great service.
