What your take?

I'm comment #11.

Want to see what you guys think. I'm really sick of yuppie Prius drivers who think they should own the road just because they are 'saving the environment' (something that I highly dispute).

I'm all for fuel economy, (as stated in the post) and I think if people really want to be economical a diesel or a small 4 cylinder does the job great. Bigger hybrids (like the Accord & RX400h) are barely than there gasoline counterparts, and smaller gasoline cars compete just as well with the hybrids themselves.

I'm not a fan of hybrids simply I feel that they are not ready for primetime. I know 2 owners of 2005 Priuses that have been extremely problematic. In fact, my neighbor's recently begun emiting a high pitch scream (as in you can hear it a block away) when running on electric.

I'm neither a proponent or opponent to hybrid development. In fact, I know very little about hybrids since I have little interest in purchasing one. However, I would be very interested in what information sources you used in formulating your opinion. I can always stand to learn more about the subject.

I don't understand why some people are so impressed with these 'low grade' advancements in technology. Think about this, 18 years ago the Internet as we know it today didn't exist. Yah there was a WWW but not nearly as advanced. Think about how fast cell phones advanced and then morphed into PALM, Blackberry and a birage of new technological art pieces. Think about the home PC, when I was a kid (I'm 27 now) there was realitively no such thing. Sure you had maybe 2 at school and a friend who may have had one but now I can take my Cingular 8125 smart phone to my friends house and IR relay my mp3 music to his lap top while we watch a plasma tv receiving a signal from a satellite 22,300 miles above the earth....WOW that is technological advancement.

Putting an electric engine in a car to add 10mpg just doesn't seem the impressive to me.

I like this article by Brock Yates:

http://www.caranddriver.com/columns/...ock-yates.html

This quote sums it up:

Now let's jump ugly about the whole situation and talk a little reality. The guys at Edmunds.com, who run hard numbers about the car business as well as anyone, estimate that a Prius owner would have to drive at least 66,500 miles annually for five straight years, or gasoline would have to soar to 10 bucks a gallon, to equal the cost of operating a cheaper, conventional Corolla.

And THAT ladies and gentlemen, is that.
