 )I can understand the point of view of the surcharge, but instead of charging people, why doesn't Cingular send out letters to their analog and tdma clients stating that on (insert date here) those services will no longer be supported or offered and to upgrade to GSM. My Dad's friend had analog service and got a letter stating that after a certain date he wouldn't have service anymore. They offered him the typical phone discount and that was it.

Yeah, I found out 1 yr ago that my 1 yr old phone was not supported by Cingular most places outside my local area. Had to buy a new phone. Now I find that the local Cingular phones are not compatible with BMW Bluetooth. Remember, I said 'local'. Seems they are trying to iron out all the mismatches between all the individual local networks. Me? As much as I've liked my local service, I'm switching over to Verizon tomorrow.
Another thing. I had my Cingular phone stolen in Conn. I had my local provider mail me a new one. Only problem was I had to get back to Idaho to get it to work. Cingular would not recognize the new phone. Also I have to manually search for networks as I travel around. Enough is enough.

Cingular is currently having to operate three distinct networks - AMPS (analog), TDMA, and GSM. Think about what it would cost your business if you had to operate in that fashion. GSM is THE world standard, and it makes all the sense in the world for Cingular to want to have as much capacity on that network as possible. If it takes a hit in certain consumer's pocketbooks to get them to switch to the GSM network, I don't have too big of an issue with it.
As for lawsuit, I doubt that you will see in any contract that Cingular was obligated to provide AMPS or TDMA service to them for the rest of their lives. This isn't the old monopoly days of the Bell System where there is a carrier of last resort that is obligated by regulations to provide phone service. But then again this is a country that will sue at the drop of a hat, regardless of the merits of the case.

I understand the issues regarding their network. I just don't agree with the way they are going about trying to get people to change.

This isn't true. It just means that Verizon has more towers than Cingular or other GSM carries have. The kind of radio waves does not have anything to do with it.
