Hotel recommendations in the USA

Can anyone recommend hotels in San Francisco and New York? We don't have a huge budget and are more interested in location to main attractions than quality of the hotel.

Cheers.

NYC,
I am assuming the Times Sq area...
link: http://www.crshotels.com/hotels/site...om/?source=ysm

Many other links on Yahoo, et al.

Marriott Marquee in TSq is also exc.

If you are avoiding the TSq area, it opens up lists
of many other hotels in other parts of Manhattan.

If you are out and about early, seeing and doing
stuff, I would think the level of accomodations
is not the important thing...you are only sleepling
there.

Let the Board know more of your needs/time/desires;
many of us "know" GothamCity and all of us have
opins!

I agree- The W's are very nice. In San Francisco also look at the Hotel Monaco.. I stayed there in November for my cousin's wedding and it was very nice.

I have stayed at the Roosevelt (sp?) before. Great location and good price. Also if you want to do more if a package deal, try the Avalon. Its a smaller one out of the mainstream but nice.

Last time I went with friends we stayed in a corporate apartment. Now that is the way to go.

For New York, the Muse is a great little boutique hotel right off Times Square. Its on West 46th Street. It is a great value -- way cheaper than the Morgans Group hotels (Morgan, Royalton, Hudson) -- but with similar vibe and standards.

I've stayed there probably 6 times during the past year. It is amazingly calm and quiet given that it is one block off Times Square.

Tell 'em you want the News Corp. rate (News Corp. HQ is nearby and News Corp. has negotiated a good rate for their employees and visitors).

For San Fran, I recommend the Clift. It is a Morgans Group hotel. Very cool and hip, great location, price is reasonable for what you get.

Have fun! Those are two awesome cities!

The rooms at the W hotels in NYC are so small you have to go out to the hallway to change your mind.

Considering that you said you don't have a big budget, there's a DoubleTree in Times Square as is the Marriott Marquis. There are 2 Sheraton's on 7th Ave in the 50's across the street from one another, I like them because they're not IN TSq and they are nice (i lived a couple of blocks away on 54th for 10 years). There's also a Hilton on 6th ave (Ave of the Americas in the 50's that is also nice and close enough to everything but not right on top of everything so you can get out of the madness).

In San Francisco, I stay at the St. Francis. Right in the middle of town, reasonable rates, nice views from the tower.

(p.s. I live in NY/NJ still )

I stayed in the Doubletree last year; decent (although small) rooms, and very nice staff. Wife stayed at the Marriott a few years ago, and liked it, too.

My new favorite hotel in San Francisco is the Hilton. It was previously a Holiday Inn and was purchased and renovated by Hilton quite nicely. I paid a weekday rate of $149.00 online advance purchase on a recent stay.

http://www.sanfranciscohiltonhotel.com/

If you plan on renting a car, please note that overnight parking in the SF is damn near impossible. Parking and valet charge at the Hilton and other hotels will run about $35/night. The best thing to do is use public transportation, but a car rental will be needed if you plan on doing any sight-seeing along the coast or the wine country.

Have fun on your trip.
