What a great gift idea. For $400 how about a Garmin C330? I don't know much about this specific model but it's relatively small and the Garmin software is very good and is easy to use. I'm very happy with my Garmin Nuvi 350. The Magellan 300 that was recommended is nice too but I believe that it is a much bigger form factor.

Eric, I have the garmin I5 installed on my X since last December. It is a fantastic little GPS. It has all US and Canada on its hard drive and works like a charm. I also use it on my Motorbike. The screen is samll but very clear. I got it in December for $550. Now you can have it for $340 on Amazon.

Garmin is the best IMHO. Awesome product, customer service, best software, best maps, most points of interest.... can't go wrong with a Garmin.
