DLP HDTV v.s Plasma HDTV

I currently have a Zenith 42" Plasma EDTV...I regret not paying extra at the time to go with HDTV now that blue-ray dvd players have arrived...

so I'm looking to upgrade..I heard the DLP produces some sort of rainbow affect but haven't seen one in person..as for getting another plasma I'm just concerned about burn-in's...but anyways I can get a solid deal for a Samsung 50" DLP HDTV...just curious which has the better quality/durability

DLP (Digital Light Projection) is a Texas Instrumnets projected technology that has been adapted for use in rear projection TV's to replace CRT (Cathode Ray Tube). It has meant that previously low definition (by comparison) TV's have continued to be relevent by applying better projection definition and contrast ratios.

I have a DLP overhead projector and when it is warming up you can get a visible band moving across the screen for the first couple of moments, only visible on a black background.

It has brilliant performance in every other way.

I'm understanding from your question that you are asking about a rear projection TV vs a Plasma?

I go with a plasma any day, but then I prefer Pioneer as it consistently wins comparisons and is currently the technical leader here in Oz for some time.

As with all things, comparing a low budget plasma with a top end TV can give a different result.

I say it depends on your budget and lighting. The lower the budget the more a plasma will struggle.....

Regarding plasmas, its very rare that people will get any type of burn-in nowadays. A lot of plasmas made today have technology in them to prevent this, and still you'd have to leave the TV on for many, many hours straight on the same station for this happen. A couple of hours here and there won't have any burn-in effect. Plus, the way most men change channels, it'll never happen

The new plasmas coming these days have good life. You probably will ditch the TV before burn-in happens. I prefer hanging TV on the wall than sitting on a TV stand.

I went away for 4 days, and my daughter "forgot" to tell us that she turned the TV on before we got in the car..It was on a bright blue screen (for those in the UK, think Sky TV guide) for the enitre time....Had no issues with it since then and thats not the first time it happened either...

And I have an old school JVC plasma, so I doubt if the newer ones would experience any burn in issues...

I personally went with a 46" Toshiba DLP, bought the matching stand, DVD player, and saved the rest.

I am extremely happy with this decision a year later, and would only recommend a plasma over a DLP if you have space issues, or just want something that "looks" cool on your wall. Other than that, DLP!

I do agree about the comment on Pioneer Plasma. When I was doing my research, I was also lead to their lineup - particularly their "Elite" line because the body frame is black.

I have both a Samsung 61" DLP and a 50" Sony Wega LCD. In my opinion, both have a great picture and the price difference to go to a plasma isn't worth it. However, just to make note, some people are able to see a "rainbow" effect wtih fast motion on a DLP (not me); also on mostly older LCD's, some people mention a "screen door effect".
I haven't noticed either on either TV.

I saw a "Westinghouse" China TV for half the cost of the WEGA.

The Westinghouse is suppose to be same resolution but the Sony had a better picture. But not sure the picture was worth twice the cost.

I also herad reports that LCD and Plasma prices are still droping and you might be better waiting till next March?

TV prices now are just like PCs, once you buy them, they're already outdated and cost less. Its been this way the last 4 years. I bought my 50" Panasonic plasma back then for $5k (at a big discount) and the same TV today could be had for less than $3500, a 30% price decrease.

So, IMO just get it now unless you want to wait for some sale incentive at Best Buy or whereever.
