holy crap didnt think i could do that

so heres the short story, i'm driving today and its a bit slippery, well i decide to take a sharp curve and probably do it too quick and tap the brake next thing you know the car is doing a front rear fish tail. Didnt think these things could do that

What's a front rear fishtail? Fishtail = oversteer = rear steps out of line. Front plow = understeer = front wheels plow forward.

I'll assume you mean the oversteer. Yes, its quite easy to do so in the torque-rich engine and rear-biased AWD system in the Xs. By the way, braking while turning also creates oversteer. BMWs have CBC (Cornering Brake Control) to help out, but nothing defies physics.

I sometimes have fun in the X3 by shutting off DSC and taking wet corners a bit fast. It's more fun when intentional.

yes i meant overstee but it made me a bit uneasy considering there were cars next to me (not smart move on my part) granted getting control was easier than other cars i've had it wasnt the most pleasant thing to do, unfortunately i dont have the luxury to take those fast theres a lot of traffic and cars parked etc... plus i didnt really expect the slight mishap, yup i know braking doesnt help usually break prior to entering a turn but i was in the zone and um ya i've fd up quite a few times like this, once on my RL once on a 330 (brand new) and now i've pushed the X to it

CBC would solve this problem, as would have Xdrive. Unfortunately your 02' has neither, so it has to manage with its regular fixed 4 wheel drive system (which uses DSC - which also means it can only react, not prevent this sort of behavior)...

Consider this though, any car's contact patch is usually never bigger then your hand (fingers closed). A car has to manage thousands of pounds on 4 little contact spots the size of your hands... Add rain to the mix, and there ya go. Aznmpower32 is right, there is no replacement for simple physics - especially not with the all seasons your X is probably wearing...

What you experienced was lift-throttle oversteer. If you're going fast through a corner and suddenly lift-off the acceleratar, you're going to induce oversteer...even if it's fwd.

Vig's def. and diagnosis is right on, imo.

That symptom can also be induced with heavy trail braking in
tight, diminishing radius turns.

Our pre-XDrive Xs can "do it" with some ease.

You have to be careful Red. Can't get over confident because we drive the Ultimate Driving Machine. Wet roadway + sharp curve + speed = trouble.
I don't care what you're driving.

L's diagnosis is pretty succinct, too.

go to SC and pic up your next X5 at the performance center. You will learn that your X5 can do alot of things you never thought were possible. Like
180s and 360s for starters
