Question Need advice on NYC hotel getaway...

Hey all,

Even though I grew up in northern NJ, I've lost touch with many NYC spots. We will be visiting some family later this fall sometime in NJ, and I'd like to take my wife on an overnight getaway in NYC while the kids stay with my folks. Any suggestions for a romantic (not cheesy romantic, more sheik romantic) hotel to stay at in the city? I'd like something preferably in an area with good restaurants/activity/shopping/nightlife (too much to ask?). Any suggestions on where to stay would be great. Thanks!

Midtown Doubletree at 53rd (I think). Right up the block from the W and much less $$$. And you can go do the celeb spotting at the W lounge.

Smallish spartan rooms - but high end linens, plasma screens and very clean. Have fun!

Some of those Times Square hotels have miniscule rooms. (some do, some don't, obviously)

Try rooms 2505 or 2506 of the Flathotel on 52nd St (Floors 22, 23,and 24 are the same). Views in two directions. Chloe Finney is a good manager to deal with. Fewer crowds, lower key.

11 boutique hotels in lower Manhattan and Midtown, with a total of 2,099 guestrooms. The hotels include the W Hotel Union Square, the Mercer Hotel, 60 Thompson, the SoHo Grand Hotel, the TriBeCa Grand, the W Hotel Court and Tuscany, Morgans Hotel, Bryant Park Hotel, the Hotel Elysee, the Alex Hotel and the Royalton. A "village" location such as The Soho Grand might be good.

The new Mandarin Hotel at Union Square is one of the top Hotels and has great view of the Park. It is located in Midtown.

i agree. i live here and i do everything possible to avoid times square. i think you mean the mandarin in the new time warner center (columbus circle) which overlooks central park: http://www.mandarin-oriental.com/hotel/507000051.asp

if you want a very cool/hip area, check out the meatpacking district and the gansevoort hotel. both will be $$$$

Hotel Gansevoort! One of the newest and more exciting places to spend a great evening. rooftop pool, beautiful lounge, right in the meat packing industry which is filled with excellent restaurants. my girl went there last week for a company party and said it was awesome.

Meatpacking district is very cool, and aside from the obvious double entendre, a great place to go, but at 2am when you you want that quiet segue, it is still going full bore. Mandarin is wonderful until the AMEX bill arrives.

Another option might be the http://www.themaritimehotel.com/. Close to the Meatpacking funk, but out of the fray.
