How horrible.. I just caught up on this thread/topic..
It's hard to believe, in all my track days i've never seen nor heard of a fatal accident. -- My thoughts are with his family..

yes. the account of what happened was, FOC rented the infield of calspeedway. driver in modena 360 challenge stradale (CS) was passed by ben and corey in the CGT at over 150 out of the last turn. Near the end of the straight, ben was estimated at 165mph where 2nd ferrari entered the track slow and in ben's way. Ben swerved to avoid and lost control. Corey died instantly. Ben died 1 hr later.
supposedly the pitt marshall told the 2nd ferrari to go, driver hesitated, passenger yelled at driver to go, pitt marshall said stop, driver went... all this really turns my stomach.... all could have been avoided... to make it worst, dumbshits at the LA Times called them amatuer racers and said they were racing. this also re-affirms my conviction that there is no dual purpose car. a true track car would have a full cage with nascar bars, racing shells, harness, fuel cut-off and fire suppression system. the CGT did not have any of these and may have been able to save one if not two lives in that accident. be safe out there. |

I exchanged messages with Ben (ben,lj) over on Rennlist and Rennteam, he was a really nice and genuine guy, a true enthusiast. This is truly shocking and he will be missed. I reall feel for his wife and new baby daughter. I read a thread over on 6speed that he posted just a few days ago, he complimented another guy on being married for 18 years and he looked forward to many more years with his wife. Very sad.
Then I realised that this was the same Fontana circuit that claimed the life of Greg Moore back in '99, in a similar way (hitting a concrete wall at high speed). How can this happen? Surely the circuit has a duty of care to improve crash barriers particularly after such a high profile death some years ago? Concrete barriers would never be allowed in a UK circuit.

Yes, you are right. In fact we was watching that race back in October of 1999. He had an up and coming career. His family and girlfriend was there. I think Montoya won that race that day. They didn't tell the rest of the race car drivers until the race was over. I remember seeing the helicopter airlift to Loma Linda University and then telling the crowd about 30 minutes later that Greg didn't make it. It was my first time we went to Fontana ("Fontucky" for some) California Speedway to watch a race.
