Really, why do you think it's like this here in the north vs the south???
THINK ABOUT THIS FOR A MOMENT. North Dakota News This text is from a county emergency manager out in the western part of North Dakota state after a snowstorm. WEATHER BULLETIN Up here, in the Northern Plains, we just recovered from a Historic event--- may I even say a "Weather Event" of "Biblical Proportions" --- with a historic blizzard of up to 44" inches of snow and winds to 90 MPH that broke trees in half, knocked down utility poles, stranded hundreds of motorists in lethal snow banks, closed ALL roads, isolated scores of communities and cut power to 10's of thousands. FYI: George Bush did not come. FEMA did nothing. No one howled for the government. No one blamed the government. No one even uttered an expletive on TV . Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton did not visit. Our Mayor did not blame Bush or anyone else. Our Governor did not blame Bush or anyone else, either. CNN, ABC, CBS, FOX or NBC did not visit - or report on this category 5 snowstorm. Nobody demanded $2,000 debit cards. No one asked for a FEMA Trailer House. No one looted. Nobody - I mean Nobody demanded the government do something. Nobody expected the government to do anything, either. No Larry King, No Bill O'Rielly, No Oprah, No Chris Mathews and No Geraldo Rivera. No Shaun Penn, No Barbara Striesand, No Hollywood types to be found. Nope, we just melted the snow for water. Sent out caravans of SUV's to pluck people out of snow engulfed cars. The truck drivers pulled people out of snow banks and didn't ask for a penny. Local restaurants made food and the police and fire departments delivered it to the snowbound families. Families took in the stranded people - total strangers. We fired up wood stoves, broke out coal oil lanterns or Coleman lanterns. We put on extra layers of clothes because up here it is "Work or Die". We did not wait for some affirmative action government to get us out of a mess created by being immobilized by a welfare program that trades votes for 'sit-in at home' checks. Even though a Category "5" blizzard of this scale has never fallen this early, we know it can happen and how to deal with it ourselves. "In my many travels, I have noticed that once one gets north of about 48 degrees North Latitude, 90% of the world's social problems evaporate." It does seem that way, at least to me. I hope this gets passed on. Maybe SOME people will get the message. The world does Not owe you a living. |

It is curious that such a large scale event went unnoticed by federal agencies. I'm going only by your comments, as I haven't researched the event in full. But you do live there so, I'll take your word as truth
![]() Some areas of the country, IMO, are highly dependent on the rest of the country for survival, these are areas that generally focus on tourism trades for the bulk of their states economy. I know nearly every time a hurricane comes to Florida it is declared a state of emergency. I was up in Vermont one year and we had a freak storm, actually got on CNN, where two tornadoes or water-funnels came off of the lake we were staying on. They killed two people and destroyed most of the area including blocking every road way around the lakes. What was amazing to me, was like what you described. Out of no where came people with chainsaws cutting up the road blocks, groups of people were going door to door to check on each other and then forming groups to go get food and supplies to bring back to the lake. We had no electricity for 2 solid weeks, no phones no anything. It was just astonishing to see the 'team work' mentality.

Are you serious Lam? How can you compare a blizzard in an area that is accustomed to heavy snows to Katrina....
Pot stirrer.

He isn't comparing the "event" as much as the lack of interest and reliance on outside help. Keep in mind the hurricane in New Orleans had nearly a weeks warning. I know if I was told in 5 days a possible CAT5 storm (actually Katrina came on land as a CAT3) was going to hit my area......I would be gone in 24 hours. But that is me.

Nice post MD.
Here is another side note, who checks the validity of the "Snoops" site? Just curious.

Good fookin question, BigR!I recalled seeing that "news release" floating around after Katrina, and they did have a storm up in the Dakotas. But, many ref's I read at that time, suggested the pr release was bs. I don't recall the sources, from that time; thus, I just did a quick hit to Snopes. Hey, Lambeau loves that knee jerk "neo con" stuff, so I just wanted to poke back, gently, a bit. Imo, 90% or pick a number, (some huge percentage) of stuff we see on the net everyday, is fab'd, hyperbole, bs, urban myth, pumped for an agenda, etc. Some outta left field chest thumping usually calls for an lil' investigation before tossing it up, but maybe that's jes' me. |

A Lil' Off Track, but I've been reading some rants on a few
boards, about FEMA's "real agenda" and its potentially powerful "authority", espc as it now falls under that marvelous protective umbrella of DHS... No arm wrestle incite, intended, but somewhere in all this is the real stuff. There are pages of FEMA listins on GOOG; these are just two very divergent ones I plucked. Hope Eric doesn't think I'm taking his political stuff away, The Official FEMA definition: http://www.fema.gov/about/history.shtm A different opin of FEMA's design: http://www.sonic.net/sentinel/gvcon6.html
