Woman drinks so much water she dies!

This one hit home. Local gal doing a radio station contest to win a Nintendo wii. Contest was titled "hold your wee to win a wii". She was trying to win the game system for her kids.

The husband of this gal works at one of the places I do consulting work for. I went over there on Saturday and everyone was shocked. I had never heard of water intoxication before. A little over a year ago when a Chico kid was being forced to drink large quantities of water during a Fraternity Hazing. He also died.

By drinking too much water you can increase the amount of fluids in your body there for the heart has to work a lot harder which can cause problems, like heart attack.
There are a few members here that are doctor and maybe one of them can educate us a bit.

Yup, basically cells go hypertonic...or is it hypotonic I cant remember...making the cell explode.

Lysis (Greek λύσις, lusis from luein = to separate) refers to the death of a cell by bursting, often by viral or osmotic mechanisms that compromise the integrity of the cellular membrane.

This used to be a problem back in the day when ecstacy was big. Kids would roll then drink way too much water in one night.

Dilution of normal electrolytes like Sodium. Usually early signs like lethargy
progressing to coma if not reversed.

Hypotonic or hypoosmolar. Basically, hypervolemic hyponatremia can be fatal and was caused by excessive water intake. Of course, the treatment would have been water and sodium restriction and possibly use a side effect of an antibiotic called demeclocycline at a higher dose which causes diabetes insipidus (causes your kidney to dump water from you system).
