Land Rover and Jeep have placed last in a new reliability study of nearly half a million vehicles, reports JEZ SPINKS.

Four-wheel-drive specialists Land Rover and Jeep have finished bottom of a ‘Reliability League Table’ based on a new survey of 450,000 vehicles. The UK/USA study, conducted by independent car-warranty specialist Warranty Direct, reveals nearly half the customers of the British and American 4WD brands made a claim on their policy during a given 12-month period.

For every 100 policies sold to owners of three- to nine-year-old vehicles, 46.4 per cent of Jeep customers made a warranty claim, with Land Rover faring little better with 44.2 per cent. Japanese brands dominate the table produced by Warranty Direct, an insurance company that offers policies to cover vehicles once the original manufacturers’ warranties have expired. Mazda places first among a total of 33 manufacturers, with just 8 per cent of its customers making a claim on their non-manufacturer-warranty policies.

The Hiroshima-based company is joined in the top 10 by Honda (2nd), Toyota (3rd), Mitsubishi (4th), Subaru (6th), Nissan (7th), and Lexus (8th).
Kia may have a reputation for budget-priced vehicles, but the Korean car maker prevents Japanese brands taking the top eight spots by placing fifth with 17.4 per cent.

Europe’s best performances come from Anglo-German Mini and French Citroen, which both completed the top 10. Germany’s luxury car makers are beaten by the likes of Daewoo and Hyundai, with BMW (18th) and Mercedes (20th) sitting mid-table, and Audi down in 27th. “The performance of some of the world’s largest manufacturers in terms of reliability is there for all to see,” said Warranty Direct’s managing director, Duncan McClure Fisher.

“Off-road may mean rugged, but the data suggests that it may not always stand for reliability if you consider the specialists.”
