Shouldn't be done if you can avoid it.

It is the electronic image that got Boston police all freaked a couple days back. That image, in lightbrite form, started throwing up "terrorism" calls.

as stated go to heavier oil and then also go to a standard oil because it doesn't foul plugs as badly when it burns

"Synthetic" is actually a misnomer when it comes to auto oil. Synthetic oils ARE petroleum oils. They have simply been more highly refined to a better grade. In fact, most manufacturers offer a blended oil for those people who want a better quality oil than standard without paying the high cost of full synthetic. So the answer is yes, you can mix them.

My understanding is that Mobil 1 is truly synthetic and other brands start with petrobase.

Like bench racing and bs, one can argue all day about
what to do and what oil to use... Since none of us are runing ProStock, changing oil daily, or flying, I'd rec'd reading this concise, cogent post from "withidl", an infrequent but very knowledgeable poster. Also, I wouldn't sweat the "mixing" and, a higher viscosity, eg 20W-50 in a warm clime, may help that oil burner. GL,mD Lube 101: http://bimmer.roadfly.com/bmw/forums/e53/5795946-1.html And, the unabridged version of Lube 101, right of the freakin front page of this site. What a surprise... http://www.xoutpost.com/articles/x5/m...ion-101-a.html
