I remember when it was all we had, before the days of GPS, and I hope it stays around because I still see plenty of boaters using it.

GPS is better and the cost of a basic gps unit is so low that anyone with Loran could/should upgrade.

Looking at the International Loran website, they're spinning it quite differently. They indicate that the planned hearings will clear the air in regards to the issues surrounding LORAN. Congressional support for LORAN is quite strong, as the USCG's prior attempt at defunding LORAN support was rebuffed by Congress in 2006. The usage of LORAN is not limited to the ocean navigation; its application extends to surface and aeronautical navigation. It is also used by the cellular communications industry. The January 2007 Federal Register Notice requesting comments regarding LORAN's continuation beyond 2007 is an anticipated next step in the overall process of determining LORAN's viability.
