***WOW*** Movie Review:
PANS LABYRINTH was absouletely brillant. I highly recommend it and put it at the very top of my list of films you "MUST SEE." Two warnings: 1) It's not for kids. 2) It is very violent. I am still spinning from how amazing it is. B -- Just wanted to add one more thing. This movie was nothing near what I expected. I thought I was going to see some reincarnation of, "lord of the rings" or "dragonslayer" or something. It wasn't. It really was a 180 from what I thought I was going to see.

yeah i've heard a lot of interesting things about it and have been VERY interested based on the preliminary reviews and previews ...
but i'm a little disappointed when you say it's VERY violent? I don't mind some fun action/adventure violence ... but i really just don't care for unnecessary grotesque violence in films. So what do you mean by VERY violent ... Lord of the Rings-style fantasy violence? If so ... that's ok ...

So you ask what the movie is about. I will try to give some info without any spoilers. - First off, it's subtitled. But please do not let that prevent you from going to see it. This is one of those foreign language films, ala La Femme Nikita (US REMAKE = Point of No Return) that you won't mind reading the subtitles. The story takes place shortly after the Spanish Civil War (late 1930's or so.) A young girl with a vivid imagination and her pregnant mother go to live with the mother's new military husband, "Captain". Captain, with his small army, lives on the mountainside and is responsible for finding and killing the rebels who are still hiding in the woods, after the civil war. There are two main stories that play against each other in this film. 1) The young girl completing some "quests" or "tasks" that will allow her to recognize her birthright as a "princess". 2) Captain, finding and killing the rebels that continue to terrorize the military installations. -- I know it doesn't sound like a "wow" I have to see this now kind of plot. But you must see it. I predict a big Oscar night for this film. The young girl reminds me of a young Natalie Portman in "The Professional". The director, Guillermo Del Toro, also wrote and directed: Hellboy and Blade II. B
