vegas to grand canyon to san diego?

Hey everyone-

As some of you know from my earlier posts regarding good hotels in vegas, i'll be with my gf in Vegas for Valentines + an extra night: 14th and 15th, leaving Friday the 16th.

Since Monday is a holiday, we have a lot of time to do whatever, especially since I've gotten all my reading done through Tuesday the 20th

That said, I am NOT equally free with finances unfortunatey, but I was wondering how crazy you thought it would be for me to go from Vegas to Grand Canyon for one night (arriving Friday night) and then drive back to SD on Saturday?

I've never been to the canyon, except when I was a baby -- is it worth going for just one night to see the view over hte South Rim? We'd be staying in Grand Canyon Village.

ALSO: I'm used to doing a lot of driving all over California: I did 4,000 miles over Christmas break alone. So really I guess the driving isn't so much an issue, but perhaps pure fatigue may be an issue considering we would be just leaving Vegas.

Simply put: is it an unwise idea to cram so much in ? Or do you think it would be fun?

One last factor: if only out of safety/responsibility, I don't particularly like taking a gf to do something I haven't done before if there's ANY possibility of "danger." I mean, I've never done the drie to hte Grand Canyon, so I don't know what's involved -- inclimate weather, etc. -- so that's another reason I'm disinclined to do it even though i'd very much like to.

I think that's a tight agenda. To me, the best way to do the Grand Canyon is a driving vacation with stops in Phoenix and Sedona and mix in some trail and rafting tours. There's plenty to do in Vegas for your short vacation.

you really need some more time to do all those things you want to do. three days isn't enough to enjoy where you're going. you don't want to drive all the way to the grand canyon, take a picture, and head back. spending more time in one place will be far more enjoyable and relaxing...it is a vacation after all

Yup, I say stay in Vegas. There's lots to do, and there's plenty of good walking trails and such in the outskirts. Have fun!

It's not an impossible trip, but it's a long, haulazz trip, imo...

It's about 5+ hrs from LostWages to The Canyon, barring snow near
the canyon. South Rim is open in winter; seldom is North Rim this time
of year.

If you left Vegas by 1 ish, you might get there for a sunset and then
sunrise the next morning, before hauling fanny for SD.

But, it's 800+ miles back to Diego, prob. 12 1/2+ hrs even hauling azz.

The upside is the Canyon is "empty" this time of year compared to the summer.
The downside is you are looking at 18hrs of road time and
"20 mins of seeing" the Canyon.

Go to Vegas..hang out, then you can take a drive to Hoover Dam - that's always a cool thing to see.

and yeah, having slept on the idea, i woke up realizing how crazy the thought was ... and i agree with all of you -- and after analyzing it on www.virtualearth.com -- it is a ridiculous idea lol.

but someone mentioned at least taking a drive down to Hoover Dam. That seems plausible, no? only 30 miles out of Vegas it looks like!
