Man Sues IBM Over Adult Chat Room Firing

You can't make this stuff up....

Help! I'm a sex addict. That means I'm disabled and I need rehab....

Man Sues IBM Over Adult Chat Room Firing

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) - A man who was fired by International Business Machines Corp. for visiting an adult chat room during the workday is suing the company for $5 million, claiming he is an Internet addict who deserves treatment and sympathy rather than dismissal.

James Pacenza, 58, of upstate Montgomery, says he visits chat rooms as treatment for traumatic stress incurred in 1969 when he saw his best friend killed during an Army patrol in Vietnam.

In papers filed in federal court in White Plains, Pacenza said the stress caused him to become "a sex addict, and with the development of the Internet, an Internet addict." He claimed protection under the American with Disabilities Act.

Our legal system is what makes this possible.

Actually in a sense you're right. Any human demonstrating this kind of warped irrational thinking has to need some rehab. But sorry since he chose to exhibit this behavior he needs to pay for it himself.

We need to adopt the system that they have in Germany where the loser pays the winner's legal fees. Then lawyers won't be so quick to take cases like this, and large corporations won't feel pressured to settle in order to save legal fees.

I won't say that the legal system, and plaintiff's lawyers in particular, doesn't share some blame but I think that it's our society on the whole that breeds and tolerates "syndromes" and all these made up "problems". If you've read past Friday Files you'll read my take on rehab these days. In addition to the latest phenomenon that everything is a syndrome or disease and that rehab is a silver bullet for everything, the other big issue is that no one takes responsibility for their own F ups. Our society loves to play the blame game. That applies to situations like this to major things like the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. There is still finger pointing going on with that mess.
