Phone call scared the shit out of me

I was driving to school on wednesday, and while driving i was listening to music, and suddenly the music stopped and I heard a phone ringing, I tried to look for my phone and I looked at it and it wasn't ringing then I noticed the dash and saw a phone icon, i pressed the phone button and someone started talking, I was like holy shit. This is the first time i've ever experienced this, I don't have bluetooth in the car, and I never know the car had a phone, is this normal. Its scary on the highway going 80mph and hear a loud phone ring.

Look in the top portion of the center console storage. There is probably a StarTak phone there.

Someone likely mis-dialed the phone number associated with Assist in your vehicle.

Your vehicle has Assist and there is a phone number assocaited with it. BMW just doesn't provide the number to you so that people don't use it for normal cellular phone service. Remove your assist module and you won't have this happen again.

I thought your BMW Assist gets deactivated if you don't subscribe (or resubscribe)?

I've played with the phone buttons a few times on the X3. I can't do anything with "Phonebook", and the other button just makes it dial somewhere and then it tells me to hang up.

BMW Assist is free for the first year for sure. I thought I read somewhere that BMW had extended the Assist program to 3 years or something like that. Not sure though. Next time, ask the caller what number he dialed, and you might be able to get free incoming calls in your car!

You are correct... they extended it to 3 years as of 07 along with live traffic. They also do give you the number and it is in the manual when they send you the registration material. At least this was the case with my 335.
