Motorcyclist Dies In Collision With Big-Rig On 580. The accident occurred at 7:10 a.m. during morning commute traffic, California Highway Patrol Officer Paul Cheever said. Thomas was riding westbound on Interstate Highway 580, and lane-splitting between slow-moving vehicles as he approached the northbound state Highway 238 connector, Cheever said.

When Thomas' motorcycle came into contact with the rear of a big-rig, he was thrown onto the roadway and into the path of the rear portion of the truck, Cheever said. Thomas died at the scene. The big-rig, which was hauling sand, was traveling about 15-20 miles an hour.

CA is the only state in US that allows lane splitting...
I've done it there with success. A very effective
means of getting through traffic, but not for faint of
heart or mind wandering or, bad luck.

M'cycle riding, like lots of fun stuff in life, carries
a higher degree of risk than many standard events.

I used to do Lane splitting all the time when I was riding in France. Lane splitting is a way of life for motorcyclists in Paris. It enables to almost never be stuck in traffic jams. The difference is that over there not only it is autorized but aars and trucks are very aware of lane splitting motorcycles and motorcyclists are very aware of how to lane split. Accidents still happen though, particularly with pizza delivery scooters which ride like crazy. Being crushed under an 18 wheelers has always been a big concern of mine therefore I am always very careful when I over pass a big truck.

The first time a bike lane split on me in LA i was PISSED, mostly because I didn't see him and was just about to change lanes and almost hit him. It's not something that was legal in any of the states that I've lived in, so needless to say it was pretty surprising when it happened.

Done it for many years and will probably continue, it's the best way to get to locations with heavy traffic like race events and downtown.

I lane split on occassion but do so with caution.
I have a big scooter, as such, do not feel comfortable tossing it through narrow lanes. Yes, I do see full dressers do it with great ease, but I'm just not that confident.
