When you hear the word “gentleman” what does it brings to mind

Do you fit the mold of a traditional gentleman?

A gentleman Opens a door for a lady.
A gentleman Also pulls out her chair when she sits down for a nice meal.
A gentleman is polite. He never belches or farts in front of a lady.
A gentleman always says thank you and please.
A gentleman is attentive to all conversations.
A gentleman is not overly concerned with himself.
A gentleman never blows his nose at the dinner table.
A gentleman never uses bad language.

What has happend to chivalry; ? The combination of qualities expected of an ideal Gentleman esp. courage, honor, courtesy, justice, and a readiness to help the weak. Seems to me that courteous behavior, esp. that of a man toward women has become old fashion. Instead it's been replaced by the loss of a moral compass.

What do you think???

I'd say if some follow some of what you listed, however those standards are from the old days, in all honesty I've never met a real gentleman if those were the rules. I mean I'm 23, and yes I use fountain pens, and handkerchifs, and follow most of the above rules; but attentive to all conversations, some people are straight stupid, or lack any form of intelligent conversation. Chivalry ended because of capitalism, it forced the world into a dog eat dog world, and there's a no holds bar to greed and violence. Im not saying that there are no gentlemen, or that capitalism is a bad thing, but its just how our society has evolved, there is no more loyalty, with mtv = then new generation doesn't give two shits about any of the things listed above.. example I go to college and its courteous to keep the door open if someone is behind you, I do but most will not say "thank you" they just keep walking. Sorry about the rant but yea I guess the sums what I think about the topic.

P.S. lady has taken on quite a new defination in the new century.

Gentlemen as you describe are a dying breed. They are out there but I haven't met or witnessed a young gentleman. It's become "Old School". It' sad. That doesn't apply only to gentlemen, I think respect and manners in general are in a decline.

And then there's you Barry. You are a gentleman

Thanks for your response. Let me just expound that these are not standards that are from the old days. These are standards that are still accepted by those who lived long enought to know that it's the right thing to do.

And yes you sumed it up nicely when you said "but its just how our society has evolved" Perhaps de-evolved might be a more appropriate term if there is one.

My encouragement is Let us not be forced into the world into a dog eat dog world, where there's a no holds bar to greed and violence. A world of capitalism filled with as you say "people are straight stupid, who lack any form of intelligent conversation who need to use bad language in the place of civil intelligent conversation".

Instead....in spite of all there is wrong let's seek the advantage of being a gentleman.

OBTW the dictionary defines lady as follows:

lady noun ( pl. -dies)

1 a woman (used as a polite or old-fashioned form of reference) : I spoke to the lady at the travel agency | [as adj. ] a lady doctor. • ( the Ladies) Brit. a women's public toilet. • an informal, often brusque, form of address to a woman : I'm sorry, lady, but you have the wrong number.

2 a woman of superior social position, esp. one of noble birth : lords and ladies and royalty were once entertained at the house. • a courteous, decorous, or genteel woman : his wife was a real lady, with such nice manners. • ( Lady) (in the UK) a title used by peeresses, female relatives of peers, the wives and widows of knights, etc. : Lady Caroline Lamb.

I think the word respect says it all. Respect for me, himself, others. That reflects in ones actions.

I wish it was that simple. Some people don't know the meaning of the word.

You hit the nail on the head. Everyone is too busy and self absorbed to be concerned with how they treat others. It's an all about me attitude. They don't understand that how you treat others ultimately effects how you are treated.

People actually blow thier nose at the dinner table? that is disgusting...

as for being a Gentleman it's not that difficult to stand out in my generation of "I am entitled to and I have this etc" granted I don't listen to every conversation attentivly but I do listen to conversations attentivly outside of my work life.

Chivelry is one of the greatest assets a younger man can have...that and not being spineless and actually accepting responsibility for thier actions in the business enviornment

The thing about gentleman and ladies is neither are born both are raised, taught mostly by actions so if you are having a problem with the lack of younger Ladies and Gentlemen in this world the older generations must look only at themselves and figure out where they let the younger generation down.
