For all you music novices

Time to Get your grove on.

LONDON (Reuters) - British rocker Pete Townshend on Wednesday unveiled an Internet-based software program that will help music fans compose personalized tracks at the click of a button.

The Who guitarist/songwriter said that with a voice recording, a digital image and a rhythm clapped into a microphone, his new "Method" software will create spontaneous digital music and allow anyone to be a composer, and possibly a rock star.

I remember reading about this 20 years ago. Townsend was writing a rock opera "Lifehouse" following the success of "Tommy" but it got so convoluted and complex that he couldn't finish it. If I remember correctly, the opera was to use synthesized music that was not composed, but instead generated by inputs from the live audience. I know the project is still ongoing. If and when he ever finishes it and if it comes to the stage or screen, I would definitely go see it.

BTW - The article says Townsend founded the use of synths in rock and roll. That can't be right. The first Who album to feature the synth was Who's Next in 1971. There's a bunch of Moody Blues albums that predate this and I'm pretty sure they were using Moogs or EMS's. Keith Emerson is the preeminent synth player of the 70's, along with Rick Wakeman.

The article's history explanation ends with a reference to Switched On Bach. Unfortunately it doesn't say much about artists who played the Moog board in rock.
