Volvo is giving huge incentives to buy
their cars. You can tell they are in trouble...

I actually after having one for awhile, really like Volvo's, they have excellent sound systems (MUCH better then BMW's, and wonderful seats (again tied with my X5) I think Volvo has more safety innovations as well, I have always questioned BMW's HPS tube as I have always felt a curtain provided better protection in a side impact crash then a TUBE, I also have always questioned BMW's door mounted side airbags vs traditional seat mounted side airbags, finally I never really felt the E46 3 series was terribly safe in side impact crashes, it just didn't feel all that safe to me, the X5, no doubts but the 3 my mom has, eeeh, not sure, I would say with Volvo's safety and sound systems with BMW's top tier interior materials and driving dynamics, that would be one perfect car!

BMW switched to the full side curtain airbags on the newer BMWs. Like even my first MY2004 X3 has the side curtain. I prefer door-mounted side impact airbags, but BMW is switching to seat mounted as well. I am disappointed that BMW is not offering the side impact airbags on the latest BMWs. I believe for rear passengers, a curtain alone is insufficient.

Safety is no concern in any BMW though, at least for me.

My BMW saved my life. I was in a 5 car accident on the highway and i was caught in the middle and walked away without a scratch. Every other passenger in all the other cars went to the hospital with some pretty serious injuries. Out of about 40 people involved i was the only one walking around like nothing happened. They actually had to pry a E350 van off of my X5 thats how bad the van crumbled around the X

My mother drives a 2004 XC70 wagon. I feel much safer in a BMW than I do in that thing. Volvos have plenty of things to help you in the event of a crash, BMWs also help you avoid crashes in the first place. Our Volvo has the worst steering and brakes of just about any car I've ever driven. It can't handle worth a damn, the wipers suck, the DSTC doesn't do a thing.. The build quality isn't that great.. My friend's father bought an XC90 V8 and ditched it after 4 months for a new GMC Yukon. The Yukon actually is more comfortable and drives better.

I have an XC70 loaner right now because my Volvo is in the shop, and with the loaner AND my soon to be lemoned S40 those things SUCK. I've come close to so many accidents and the only thing that has saved my ass has been the BMW Performance Driving programs I did. Then besides the rattles, the entire dashboard is being replaced for the second time because the fookin' windows stop working in the rain; and the fifth fix on the transmission for death lag and steering for the excessive understeer. Despite my family having owned 18 of them, this POS will be the last one to grace our garage. (X5 or 328xi (but more likely the X) coming soon )
