I'm in need of a couple pair: clear & sunglasses, and the last two pair, at $250 each, were a freakin nightmare. Two sites I'm looking at are Eyeglasses.com and FramesDirect.com Any experiences out there in Are You Experienced Land? Thanks, mD

Not sure this is a wise move buying eyeglasses on line. Do you need a RX? If so i would imagine that an online service will not provide you with an exam. Then what about getting the frames to fit properly? You may be better off dealing with a pro. Even if you have your own RX getting glasses fitted in very important. Getting glasses should never be a nightmare. There isn't that much to it. But it does need to be done right.

QwkAg:
I have my Rx in hand, from this past April done at the eye Doc. The glasses place connected to him was a real rip. I waddled into WalMartNation, as their optical joints got some good reviews. 2 re-dos later, both pairs suck: my clears have barrel distortion and my sunglass frames are falling apart. They, WallyWorld, have thus far refused to do any more "adjustments". Came close to telling them to F Off. WTF was I thinking going there in the first place... Not a super hard Rx: 240 right, 260 left, with clear or +1 bifocal, as I can still read the fine print. Some net digging shows that the cost of lenses, even with bifocal, hard Rx, "coatings", etc. is under 10 bucks. The frames are marked up 200-400%...thus, my hunt on those sites, neither of which is very easy to use. Not critical, as I can live with my specs...was just looking for ideas. I will give MiCkEy's site a look, too. |

Are you a Costco member? The glasses I bought there are pretty good and the prices are low. They will fix any problems w/frames or lenses for free too.

jek, Not a Costco member, as we have none here in far western NC.
The more I look at these sites, the more I realize it's like buying shoes on-line: hard to know if they really fit and how they look, even with the put-'em-on-your-mugshot feature... Phil, welcome to On-Line Come ons, lol! Hey, how you hitting them these days? |

This is exactly what i was talking about. That's why i suggested going to a few shops that have some decent frames. Look at it like your cars. You wouldn't go to Wally-world to service them would you? So why not give your eyes the same consideration. As you well know you get what you pay for. Having worn specs for a while i personally can personally attest to this fact.
Short story: I have some frames i wear all of the time. (you have seen them) I had a bit of trouble finding nose pads for them. The frames are not easily found. Get the nose pads online? maybe but not cost effective. Just in passing though in a city nearby i went in to a shop that was loaded with highline frames and there were all kinds of people in the store. So we browsed for a bit. The owner came from behind the counter took one look at my frames and said take those off. Give em here. He promptly re-adjusted them, put on new nose pads and aligned them to my facial structure again. Great service that i would not have received online. Cost? free. There are some people who are into their craft and the hands on thing just does it. You should find a shop who loves doing their thing. I bet if you gave it a little effort it would pay off. Quote:
