If we were to include the entire 20th century, it would undoubtably be Al Jolson, whose role in helping define 20th century American music is largely forgotten.

It was the Jews and the Blacks in America who, at the turn of the century, ushered in an evolutionary change in music through jazz and pop. If it weren't for folks like Jelly Roll Morton, Irving Berlin, Al Jolson, Bing Crosby, Satchmo, W.C. Handy, etc., there wouldn't be a Frankie, Elvis, or Michael Jackson. Crosby repeatedly said throughout his career that Jolson was his idol.

Okay - let's try another avenue. Is it Mickey Mouse, Superman, or Charlie Brown?

How's about Bob Hope?

Tupac?

Lou Ferrigno?

Mickey= Not really an entertainer
Superman=Same thing
Charlie Brown=Nope
Bob Hope=Getting warm
Tupac=Rapper but not really an Entertainer
Lou Ferrigno?= ?????

I'm surprised noone came up with Judy Garland who was often reffered to as the world's greatest entertainer.

Wasn't the part of the question male entertainer?

I hear Joseph Stalin held the most fascinating dinner parties... or was it Pol Pot? I forget They both set a few records in their time

I thought the original post asked for an opinion as opposed to an answer
