Anyone been to NC's outer banks

The wife and I are looking for a vacation spot. We heard the outer banks was nice. Anyone been there and can recommend where to stay, what time of year is best to go, what to do, etc?

I've been there, around Nags Head and Kitty Hawk. It's beautiful. I didn't stay there so I can't recommend a place. They rent out these huge beach houses around there which will be good to go on in with other couples/people. Summer time is the busy time and the most expensive. September would be cheaper but it's a hit or miss because of hurricanes.

We rented a large house with 7 bedrooms and 6 baths from Joe Lamb and Associates. A quick google will provide you with several agencies that rent houses. As Mister2 indicated it is a popular spot for mulitple family gatherings. We had my folks 50th wedding anniversary in the OB and everyone had a great time.

Beach, water sports, fishing and golfing are the most popular activities.

we were about to get around to renting a house near Charleston, S.C., but we pulled out. Last year we went to the Dells, along with half of IL's population. Never again.
Heading to cali in a week.
Have fun in N.C. If that doesn't work out, there are a lot of rental places in Virginia Beach, VA.

Thanks truex5er. I hear you on WI. We are looking to go somewhere on the east coast so we will check out Viginia beach as well. Thanks for the tip.
