Hire Car recommendations in LA

Well we arrive in LA on Sept 12, and are going to drive straight to San Diego. We were having a bit of fun trying to decide what kind of car to cruise around in whilst in SD.... thinking maybe a convertible of some sort.

Can anyone recommend a good hire car company or tell me who the companies are besides Avis?

We understand that the weather there is kind of hot at the moment? (winter down here so we'll be the white skinned tourists in shorts) so are thinking something for a bit of fun.

Then we're back to Annaheim and Disney for a while before trekking up Highway 1. That's going to take a few days then using San Fran as a base we want to cruise around to Santa Rosa and Lake Tahoe down to Yosemite then back to SF. We'll be flying back to LA so the hire will be one way.

Not sure what to drive for this kind of trip... wife sugested a mobile home kind of like the one in Meet the Fockers for a laugh but I prefer an X5 type of smaller 4wd.

Any suggestions?

Cheers

Why don't you rent the Hertz Shelby GT-H with drop top?

Search the Hertz Fun collection........they usually have a nice selection of convertibles you can choose from.

If you want a more mundane car or possible a SUV, Alamo usually works out well. For our trip to San Francisco, I booked a compact knowing we'd get bumped up at no charge. Lo and behold, at the airport all the compacts were taken out. They actually had no supervision at all, and the keys were just stuck in the keyholes of the available cars and you drove out on whatever you felt like (the attendant at the gate never cared). So we got a free double upgrade and paid a compact rate . Be careful though.............SUV means more fuel consumption. Gas is cheap in the US, but it's not free. Think about that before driving off in some Chevy Equinox or Jeep Cherokee.

I use Thrifty, I always get upgraded. You can go with any reptuable car rental here, you will not have problems. Just get the cheapest.
Reputable companies: Hertz, Thrifty, Avis, Dollar, Enterprise, Alamo, and National.
Beware though, in the US we use the term "car rental", because "car hire" is more commonly associated with a Limousine Service. You don't want that.

No advice to give on the car hire but please do keep us Southern Californians apprised of your itinerary. If at all possible, it would be great to meet you while you are here.

Call me cheap, but I kinda like to travel smart. A "free" upgrade from a fuel-efficient compact to a midsize SUV won't be so "free" if the SUV drinks twice as much gas and has a gas tank 2x as large. That's what went through my mind at the Alamo rental garage. That's like getting a room upgrade at a hotel and then spending all the money you saved (and then some) on room service.

Make sure the car rental company you book with is located on-site at the airport. Yea, there's a ridiculous airport concession charge, but the convenience and time you save is worth it. I hate waiting 15min for a shuttle to take me somewhere else, and then having to take the shuttle back on the departure date. Because when you're on vacation, 15 min seems like 3 weeks.
