Whichever format "wins" will be all that's made after the "victory."

And I'm talking about the players, not the media. So if you've got one, and the other "wins," then you're stuck.

That's why we care.

Can you find a dual Betamax/VHS player now?

Don't compare this to the DVD+R/DVD-R wars. The format that has the most movies (and distribution) will win IMO.

The only reason Blu-ray is in the lead is because of the PS3...unfortunatley most gamers dont buy DVD's so those numbers dont really count as much as stand alone units where HD-DVD has the real lead.

Blu-Ray is the better technology, but HD-DVD is the smarter group...I see HD-DVD winning this race. But it will be years before she crosses the finish line and by then we will see affordable dual players.

The difference is Beta and VHS were different sizes. Blu-Ray and HD-DVD will both fit in the same tray.

I understand that.

But whichever format wins will be the only one supported by hardware manufacturers after that. Why would they build in a capability for a market that will fade away?

Hence my Beta vs. VHS question. VCR makers could be making dual Beta/VHS machines right now - but they're not.

So is Paramount pushing it to Blue Ray now?

I have not bought a HD DVD player before now, because I really could not tell which format would eventually win (re: VHS/Betamax). Now, I think I may know. Blu-Ray will be the VHS.

Correct. Almost everyone is now on the BR train.

Most of Hollywood seems to have made its choice: in the Blu-ray corner there is Columbia, Disney, Twentieth Century Fox, Lionsgate, Miramax, New Line, Sony and now Warner Brothers, who previously produced for both formats. The Warner Brothers decision to come off the fence should mean that a projected 75 per cent of the top 100 DVDs will eventually be available only on Blu-Ray. Paramount and Universal, which still back HD DVD, may yet switch sides. In any case, punters at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas seem confident that the battle is almost over.
