More ACLU trying to stir a racist pot

http://www.cbs46.com/news/13955560/detail.html

Is it AMERICAN civil liberties union or AFRICAN-AMERICAN civil liberties union??

Quote:
American Civil Liberties Union Georgia president Debbie Seagraves said the proposal is too vague and would unfairly target African-Americans.

"We're going to do that in a society that has already criminalized young black youth to the point (that) we already have hundreds of black men in prison," Seagraves said.
Now you might think this is some law on crime or something like that since prison is mentioned, however it is about an indecency law against baggy pants.

--
Baggy pants that show boxer shorts or thongs would be illegal under a proposed amendment to Atlanta's indecency laws.

"Indecency" laws are cultural. What one culture considers normal, another may consider indecent. In the case of baggy pants, it would appear that mostly African American kids are the ones who dress like that. So I would agree that such a law would target African Americans.

This is no different than if a law was passed to criminalize wearing a turban (thus targeting muslims) or cowboy boots (targeting southerners).

It's not like these kids are walking around naked. They wear shorts under their pants. While I think it looks rediculous, it is certainly their right to dress like that.

Well, I guess you're showing how racist..you might be. The only people around my area I have ever seen dress like that are white.

My point is, the rule will be put to a vote...the ACLU can shut its mouth as there is no constitutional right to baggy pants.

I agree, it is more of an age thing than a race thing. Many of the male teenagers at the local high school (majority white) insist on showing everyone the top several inches of their boxer shorts. Makes me want to puke.

True. Around here, it's about 50/50. Generalizations can lead to error.

If someone can please post the Wiki link to the article/amendment to the Constitution discussing baggy pants, dress codes, or anything pertaining, I'll buy you a beverage of your choice.

MY biggest issue with the ACLU is that I feel they really do nothing useful, I honestly feel as a gay man, I am also in a minority, but I have never felt the need to use the 'Gay' card, I really feel that is why the ACLU annoys me so much, I think they have outgrown themselves and are frankly useless, now anyone who has met me or even listened to me knows how strongly I feel about my own gay rights, so I understand where the ACLU came from, and I feel they we're not always this useless, I honestly hope someday that we (Gay's) are in a position like the ACLU where we have outgrown our use, and finally have equal rights

First off the ACLU is NOT chartered to represent minorities..it is suppose to protect the civil liberties of ALL United States Citizens.

And IMO, as a straight white male, I feel extremely profiled and played against by almost every organization. I could list for you complete racist and sexist practices performed today by the US Govt that are viewed as 'fair and balanced', your head would spin..trust me.

From their own site (no where does it say 'defend the minorities rights', but some how that is how they are being used now:

Quote:
The mission of the ACLU is to preserve all of these protections and guarantees:

* Your First Amendment rights - freedom of speech, association and assembly; freedom of the press, and freedom of religion.
* Your right to equal protection under the law - equal treatment regardless of race, sex, religion or national origin.
* Your right to due process - fair treatment by the government whenever the loss of your liberty or property is at stake.
* Your right to privacy - freedom from unwarranted government intrusion into your personal and private affairs.

Perhaps you should pay attention more to what the ACLU does than what the say. Action speaks louder than words.

Whenever I hear someone complain about the ACLU, it is always a complaint about something that one of their leaders said. It is rarely a complaint about something they actually did.
