Question Best way to keep in touch with U.S. while in Mexico?

Thinking of going on a 7-day Mexican Riviera cruise, just wondering what others have done to keep in touch with family and friends back home while on vacation in Mexico?

I have a Verizon cellphone so that will be useless out of the U.S.

Are these my best/only options?:

1.) Use my laptop on-board to access their wi-fi network and pay the $25/hr. fee to send/receive emails.

2.) Rent or buy a GSM phone and buy a SIM card when I get to shore in Mexico.

Just curious what others have done, especially those without a GSM phone, and what costs to expect to pay.

Are you sure Verizon does not work in Mexico? I know my Verizon worked all in mexico (we only went in Baja but if I recall it roamed on TelCel, my T Mobile works all around mexico it uses either MOVIstar or TelCel, however I had to call Verizon/T Mobile to have it turned on, but since we are in Mexicom quite often it was worth it to me, just keep in mind those VERY high per-minute fees, I have found the best way to get around it is to text message, good luck!

Thanks, I'll check with Verizon to see what they say my options are but it is my understanding that the CDMA network only works in the U.S. or close to the border but I'll be in the southern tip of baja in Cabo, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta.

No need to check with Verizon. I just got back from a cruise to the places you listed and my phone worked just fine.
