A Magical Night at Fenway

Fenway Park erupted into a frenzy as 23-year-old rookie Clay Buchholz fired a no-hitter and blanked the Orioles, 10 to 0, in an historic night at Fenway, September 1, 2007.

My 15-year-old son and I were fortunate enough to be there in Loge Box 126, Row KK, seats 5 and 6.

Buchholz was called up from Pawtucket (AAA) earlier in the day when teams were allowed to expand their 25-man rosters, and spun the No-No in only his second major league appearance, just two weeks after his MLB debut.

Dustin Pedroia made the play of the game, preserving the no-hitter with a spectacular diving stop in the seventh. Big Papi blasted a bases-clearing double off the Jimmy Fund sign in the fourth, and Youk went deep in the sixth, with a three-run homer just over the Green Monstah.

Buchholz drew his second start when the Red Sox were forced to shuffle their rotation after Tim Wakefield was scratched from Friday's game with a sore back. Buchholz found out in the middle of Pawtucket's game, gathered his things, and headed to Boston.

Magnificent!

No matter who (whom?) you root for, if you're a baseball fan, that was a game for the ages. Neither of use will ever forget that. A very special night.

(Please forgive the quality of the first two pics.)

He could kick my butt now, but I'd never tell him that. I'd be in big trouble if I did.

Wow - one of the best games ever to see live! My son went the next day which was also a good game, but nothing compared with this one!
