My brother in-law went to RPI. It is one of the top engineering schools in the Northeast. Perhaps people down south don't know about it, but it is very prestigious and well-known in the mid-Atlantic and New England regions.

Well, I just talked to someone there, and I was very surprised to hear that they require AT LEAST two on-campus visits per class per semester for all their distance learning students. That seems like a lot for a distance learning program, especially when taking into account that most people take two classes per semester. I asked the guy, "So, whom is this distance program designed for, people within 50 miles of Troy, NY?" The guy did not know what to say other than, "hmmm... sorry, sir, I don't make the rules."

I asked that someone from the actual program call me to discuss this a little further. Hopefully, I can work something out with them.

Again, thanks to all of you for your comments, and encouragement. Much obliged! :-)

RPI is a top-notch school. One of the very best.

Juan, I think you will find that any reputable online university will require a certain amount of actual class visits. The secret is to find a university that you will want to visit at least twice a semester (i.e. not Troy, NY).

Oh, I understand on-campus visits. I have spoken with NYU and Seton Hall about their distance learning programs, and they, too, have an on-campus visit requirement. And I can understand that... I just don't know that I can do FOUR visits per semester.

I'll work something out, I am sure. Seton Hall's campus is in West Orange, NJ (near Newark), which is also "not a very good area." NYU's campus is in the middle of the Village in NYC, which is cool... but I have called the bastards three times and left voice mails, and no one has called me back!

I have also looked into programs from Austin Peay, Mercer, and UNC Chapel Hill (though they don't offer a Masters -- only a certificate program).

I don't know what to do anymore....!!!
