JV is on a distinguished road
Must be nice to be a soccer phenom

He picked up a brand new 3er at my local dealership in exchange for an endorsement deal, sheesh!

Brake it like Beckham: Freddy Adu gets first car
By Joseph White, The Associated Press
ARLINGTON, Va. — Freddy Adu was practically giddy as he watched his first car roll out of the showroom.

"Man! I can't believe that's my car, man!" said Adu, waving his arms with a big smile on his face.

"Too early for you," his mother, Emelia, told him with a chuckle.

Well, whether he's ready or not, America's teenage soccer phenom is hitting the road in a 2006 BMW 330i he received Monday as part of an endorsement deal with a local dealership. The D.C. United forward was also feted with a cake to belatedly celebrate his 16th birthday, which was June 2.

"Every day to practice, this is what we're taking from now on," Adu said.

Adu has his learner's permit, but his schedule with United has slowed his progress toward completing the necessary road work to get his license in his home state of Maryland. He said he hopes to be driving on his own by the end of next month.

"I'm pretty much a defensive driver, to be honest," he said. "I've been driving my Mom all the time, so that's how I've been taught."

Last year, Adu at age 14 became the youngest U.S. athlete on a major league team in more than a century. Since then, every personal and professional milestone has been eagerly noted by fans: his first game, his first goal, his first commercials, his high school graduation, his birthdays — and now his first car, a $44,000 black sedan with enough extras to make a mother nervous.

"Everything is me in this car," Adu said. "This is awesome."
