Question about Nintendo DS

My 11 years old daughter wants a Nintendo DS for Christmas. She already has a game cube, a WII and a xbox 360 but she still wants a nintendo DS go figure....
Anyway, this old timer is not up to date with electronic games technology so I have questions for those on this board who are. Are the Nintendo DS and Nintendo DS lite 2 different products? If yes should I go for the Nintendo DS or the Nintendo DS lite? Are they both playing the same games?
Thanks

Both the same, just different construction and the Lite is newer and more "up to date". Go with the DS Lite. They both play DS games and gameboy games. Santa delivered a pink one to Peyton, Nicole's 6y.o. girl, a pink DS lite last year for Christmas. She of course loves the puppy game and hamster game.
