Where could one possible start and not resort to a long list. I guess one suggestion might be this Dale Carnegie publication.

Many years ago, the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Carnegie Institute of Technology conducted investigations that found about 15 percent of one's financial success is due to technical knowledge; 85 percent is due to skill in human engineering -- personality and the ability to lead people. (More on this later if need be)

Above all In my humble opinion hands down there is no better character builder than the Holy Bible.

Always put the seat down. There is NOTHING like waking in the middle of the night to a woman that fell in ice cold water.

Aspire to be a good person, do an unselfish act everyday. Money is an object not a state of being. Make hapiness your life goal, you'll be more successful.

Your children will be your legacy...

Caveat: I'm a BIG risk guy when it comes to work & life I just turned 29, started my own DoD consulting business at 25. I was engaged for 3 months before I was married.

Don't be afraid to brag about your abilities/capabilities in your career. This is not to say be obnoxious and cocky but more so respectful of your own talent. Remember that no person will look out for your interests like you will and make sure that you are given what you're worth.

Have faith in your ability, opinion and talents.

Hard work and good luck can achieve anything.

Measure your life by how much fun you're having, not your wallet.

Every pasture will be greener then yours, so don't envy anything.

Set a goal(s) for yourself, where you'd like to be or what you'd like to do. Don't make this a lifelong projection but more so a focused assumption of your near term goals. Remember that things can change on a whim and something that you love today, you may hate tomorrow.

Most Importantly:
You can't steal second with your foot on first.

This is more or less my philosophy.

One day a farmer's donkey fell down into a
well. The animal cried piteously for hours as
the farmer tried to figure out what to do.

Finally, he decided the animal was old, and the
well needed to be covered up anyway;

it just wasn't worth it to retrieve the donkey.

He invited all his neighbors to come over and
help him. They all grabbed a shovel and began
to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the
donkey realized what was happening and cried
horribly. Then, to everyone's amazement he
quieted down.

A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally
looked down the well. He was astonished at what
he saw. With each shovel of dirt that hit his
back, the donkey was doing something amazing.
He would shake it off and take a step up.

As the farmer's neighbors continued to shovel
dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it
off and take a step up.

Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey
stepped up over the edge of the well and
happily trotted off!

Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds
of dirt. The trick to getting out of the well
is to shake it off and take a step up. Each of
our troubles is a steppingstone. We can get out
of the deepest wells just by not stopping,
never giving up! Shake it off and take a step up.

Remember the five simple rules to be happy:

Free your heart from hatred - Forgive.

Free your mind from worries - Most never happen.

Live simply and appreciate what you have.

Give more.

Expect less

NOW ............

Enough of that crap . . . The donkey later came back,

and bit the farmer who had tried to bury him.

The gash from the bite got infected and

the farmer eventually died in agony from septic shock.

MORAL FROM TODAY'S LESSON:

When you do something wrong, and try to cover
your ass, it always comes back to bite you.

I'm your peer at 20, and up till this point in my life:

-Be humble

-Take the initiative in anything you do

-Surround yourself with people who know more and are more experienced than you

-Ask intelligent questions

Nice suggestion Barry. By far one of the most profound and practical books I've ever read. It's a book that deserves more than a single read.

Three things:

First off: work for yourself. (I'm 17)
I got a serious job over the summer working for a medium sized business, and the owner walked in and introduced herself as "the person who signs your paychecks"
Now I'm applying to business school

Secondly, one of the most valuable things I have learned is the importance of a paycheck. Whether it be an elder, a potential business partner or an idiot referee, a firm handshake while looking them straight in the eye makes all the difference in the world.

Finally, I've adopted the "F what people think" kind of attitude over the last year, I've broken down social barriers with my peers and feel like I have expanded my horizons so much because of it. There are now so many more people that I can actually "talk to" or add to my list of contacts. Most important to me though, is that I won't regret not doing something that I wanted to do thirty years down the road.

Take 'em or leave 'em, thats what I've learned amongst the rest of the academic hoohah in the attempt to prepare for college.

(BTW, I've never read Dale Carnegie, but my mother (pilot in the 1970's and 1980's) raves about him)
