Gratuities - Holiday Tipping

Am I supposed to tip the parking lot attendant with whom I have a monthly ? This weekend he hinted last year at his former employment, he made XXX during Xmas.

I park in a automated garage . No one parks or touches the car but me. The attendant is there to receive cash for parking and also directing the *newbs* on how to park in the automated lot. The ONLY time I may have used him indirectly was maybe on 2 occasions where the lot was full and I had to leave my keys with him --- so when a slot freed up, he would park it.

So what to to........no tip. $100. $500 ??????

My last parking lot I tipped graciosuly but the gentleman always parked it in a corner spot ---never opened my window to crawl out, and if I was running to a meeting, he always had the car ready when I told him what time I would need it.

If you feel as though it will set you in the wrong emotional "place" by not tipping him then do it. It need not be an extravagant gift and it also need not be cash.
Go to Costco, spend $200 on a case of booze. By some decorative "bottle" holder and give out bottles of spirits as a holiday gift.
This way you won't feel as though you have been cheap or over generous. Cash always makes you wonder. Booze is pretty neutral. If you want to go really crazy, a case of Vueve Cliquot champagne goes a real long way.

But as long as we are on the topic of tipping..

Do you tip:
Mailman?
UPS?
FEDEX?
Gardner?

Lets say you live in a house (apt's are different)..
Who do you tip?

I don't tip the USPS/UPS, etc, because I never see them. I do tip the landscapers.
Regarding the parking, you can't go wrong with a $15 or $20 Best Buy gift certificate. You just can't go wrong with that. iTunes cards are good too.

Generally I make some holiday cookies and make up little gift baggies to give to mailman and some other random people.

The security guards at the condo I generally give a small gift card to. But for every holiday I bake cookies and leave them downstairs to share with the neighbors.

UPS/FEDEX- no.

Maintenance staff- I bake treats for. The head of maintenance loves to bring my Rum Cakes home to his family.

My hair guy-Alcohol.

Neighbors-Ones that I'm close with I give other gift baggies to. ...and sometimes small gift cards to them for local restaurants.

Gardner- No, but I don't see them regularly or know them

Mailman-Yes, I usually give him a little something.

Why force them to a specific store? Give them cash!

$50. And I would hint that perhaps keeping a "special spot" for my X5 would be a nice thing for him to do...

Give the man $100 bill. They need cash. $0? What were you guys thinking? You drive BMW and give no tips for you parking guy? Thats 365 days of consistent service. Give him $100 so he can buy something for his kids, he need money otherwise he is not working as your parking guy. Dont give them Gift certificate, they want money for milk and bread, not money for iPod or iPhone. Jeez, some of you actually recommend $0, I just can't believe it. Mailman $50.
