Does anyone have a Digital SLR?
I just wanted to know if anyone has a digital SLR and whether or not they like it. One thing I noticed while I was in France was the slow shutter speed of my digital camera. I mean you could not get any decent pictures of people that are flying by on there bike. I was reading up on them and the new canon EOS XT is supposed to be really good. Does anyone have this camera? Thanks, David

I have been shoting with a Nikon D70 for over a year; the D70s is out now, but it is pretty much the same camera. I have been very happy with it, after 3 digital point & shoot cameras (each one was an upgrade).
In DSLRs these days, the Canons are good, and the Nikons are good. It is pretty much down to which one feels right in your hands, as the optics and electronics leave very little to choose between them. I like the Nikon user interface myself, and the ergonomics, but there are probably just as many who would pick the Canon. Both companies make some very good lenses (and some average ones). Lenses are where you need to spend your money. I enjoyed the faster shutter response right away, the additional depth of field control, and the low-light capability, compared to my P&S. The avatar doesn't really show it to any advantage, but I was trackside at Goodwood taking 4 or 5 shots of every car that came by, and it would have been very difficult without the DSLR. Anybody know the car in the avatar? Bonus points if you know who was driving it. Finally, be ready to do some post-processing on just about everything you shoot, whichever DSLR you look at. That is another adjustment from P&S cameras, you end up playing with Photoshop after downloading to the PC. All in all, it is more work, but I find it more rewarding. Good luck.

I have had the Canon Rebel for over a year now and I like it very much. I went through three point and shoots and was never happy with them because of what you mentioned, slow shutter response. I tend to shoot lots of sporting events my kids are involved with, and just could not do a good job with the point and shoots.
I always had Canon SLR's, so it was natural to stay with the Canon line because I have the lenses already. The Nikon also feels good and you can't go wrong with either. Go for it, the prices have come down somewhat and if you are into photography, you will have a blast with it. |

Well I was reading how the D70 was supposed to be a far superior camera then the old canon rebel. But with the release of the new XT, that has all changed. I was looking at the two at the apple store and the canon was definitely smaller and lighter. So If we were going to get a new cam i think the canon would be the one.

Canon 10D and 20D
when you buy a digital SLR you're really buying into a lens system moreso than the bodies. Manufacturers will upgrade bodies almost every 12-18 months (well canon does, nikon has issues), so you might wind up upgrading the body more often than your lens collection. canon vs. nikon is an older battle than pc vs. mac, go to www.dpreview.com and check them both out, then go to your local camera store and get some hands on time (bring your own cf card and take some pics with both) and see which one you like better. canon or nikon, you'll be happy. Me? I'm partial to canon because i like their lenses better ( i think they have a broader range of selection and better quality) but that's just my opinion, canon fits better with what i shoot. if you have any Canon questions let me know.

I found this video that was shot with a canon EOS 20D. I thought it was really cool.
