Help me name my pup...
So I haven't told you all about the big trip and puppy arrival. Jodi and I are leaving LA at 10pm tonight and flying to Conneticuit. We arrive at 6am. Then we drive an hour to East Haddam. We are picking up a puppy. An 8 week old Portuguese Waterdog. Then, on Sat, tomorrow, the same day, we grab a 3:30pm flight to Atlanta, have a 3 hour layover, and then catch another flight to LA. The whole trip will take us approximately 26hrs. For those of you who have never seen my dog Nikita before, a Portuguese Waterdog looks like this: (She will be 12 years old on Jan 13.) ![]() Here is what a multi-colored puppy looks like: ![]() So Jodi and I think we have a name selected. We are leaning towards MAGGIE. But until we meet the pup, we are not 100% commited to any name. So I figured I would ask the board for some suggestions. The pup will be a girl with a wavy coat and multi colors, black and white. We want the name to be something that sounds good with Nikita, so when we call them, there is some harmony. Some things to know about the Portuguese Water Dog that might help you suggest a name: As the breed name suggests, they LOVE the water. They are a working breed, very smart, very strong swimmers. They used to be used as fishing dogs and would herd schools of fish towards fishing nets, they would retreive in the water, they were even capable of catching fish in their mouth. - It is thought that during the Spanish Armada, they were kept aboard ships and were used to swim messages between ship to ship. They have webbed feet and can swim up to 5 miles in a warm sea. When the ships would get into battles and sunk, the dogs have been known to save sailors lives and they washed ashore into the poor peasant fishing villages on the coast of Portugal. The village people discovered how smart they are and put the dogs to work. They earned a stipend of whatever the fishing boats caught while they were on board, working. They are very mischevious but loyal. So, what are your thoughts, help us find a name. B

You're going to be ablout 20 mins away from mere here in CT. There is a beautiful town right on the water called Madison.
You might think of naming her Madison (near the water -- water dog) and you could call her "Maddie" for short. It's the name I chose for my daughter whenever we get to that point in life. |

That's a cute name !!!
I would love to name her something that has something to do with water. I always said, if I got a male Portie, I would call him AZUL. Because even though their coat is black, their skin is blue. And AZUL is blue in Portuguese. But we have also tossed around names like: Coral Surf Sandy Chili Sasha

Never been hot about giving animals people names so i did a search and here's a thought. "Charon" - Greek Mythology - The boat pilot who escorted dead souls across the river Styx to Hades. A good name for any water-loving dog.

How is that pronounced? like "Sharon"
And I somewhat agree about dogs having people names, unless the dog is very "person" like. I know this might not make a lot of sense but some dogs are very "DOGGY" and some dogs are very "HUMAN".. A human dog deserves a good human name..

I'm not sure what to suggest for the puppy's name, but its middle name sure looks like it has mischevious written all over it!
Congrats & enjoy! |

and using a name that is close to nikita will be confusing to both dogs as they won't know which one you're talking to... (btw- my 4 year old Malamute is named Nikita Nikki for short)

No doubt, I'm a little bonkers..
But after meeting with a few breeders on the left coast, I decided I wanted to get our pup from the same breeder I got Nikita from. My wife wanted to come with.. So we made it a family event.
