Not whining, but for the few retired/fixed income gang here, this
past couple months watching the Mkt has not been fun. I realize
it will/should/could get back to "normal" or get better, or stumble
through a serious slowdown, and I'm not hitting the panic button,
but it is a real concern.

I've lived through several slowdowns, a few recessions, etc. But,
I was always gainfully employed at the time with very good dough
pouring in over the transom...this is a different time & situ, for me.

I think while JoeAmerica maybe pulling in his spending horns a tad,
it is indeed, the overextention of personal spending/credit, tied to
the Ponzi scheme like rebundling of crap "credit/loans" that the Wall
St geniues concocted, that will drag us into a no fun situ. Tie that
to the cost of "energy", (manipulated at the very least), shaky
credit mkts., and it's gonna be an ugly year.

I won't miss lunch and I don't live in a retiree reefer box, but I do have
some short term and rest of decade concerns...

Trying to avoid "politics", but my sense of the 'tax rebate' is that the
pittance offered to JoeSixPack, (persumably to go out and spend that
small pennies from heaven sum, thus "fueling" the econ.), and it will be
basically "funded" by selling more junk TBills to the mkt., (read China,
Saudis, et al.) What a fookin system...Edit: my point here is not that
I care who buys our gov't "junk" bonds, but that we continue to pump
them out, sell them, and hope that the Piper will win some future lotto
to "pay back" in some future time...

Maybe you need a remote "assistant" here in FL/NC? ;>)

Seems to me your argument goes beyond world economics and goes to the real issue of the moral breakdown of society. If indeed what you describe is true then the problems we all face (not just economic) will continue on a downward pace.

The answer to solving the problems we collectively face will be discussed, and answers looked for by the many who believe they know what's wrong. But nothing can or will be solved when the answer to the problem is in the hands of those who are the cause of the problem in the first place.

Right about here is where the quote unquote wise answer should be quoted. But i won't bore folks with the details. No one want's the hear the truth anyway.

IMO as a whole the average US Citizen has become very lax, which is odd since in general it is one of the longest/hardest working groups of people. I remember my father struggling to purchase his $105,000 house in 1985, now today that same house was (pre-blowup) retailing for nearly $500,000. Something was wrong.

And on with more of my rant (since it is nearing tax time), why is it that once a persons yearly income goes over $102,000 they no longer pay social security taxes? IMO, these are exactly the people that can truly afford to pay it.

My issue with the US is our sense of entitlement with no output, we seem to think we DESERVE that new BMW or Porsche, or huge house in the 'burbs because we're Americans, that bothers me, now I've grown up VERY privileged and have always had what I wanted, but my parents are extremely good with their money and passed that onto me, when I get a huge bonus I pay off all my bills, the Treg's almost paid off for the year, I don't have credit card balances from month to month and I don't spend beyond my means, Yes I have a nice luxury suv, a great condo and tons of gadgets but all those gadgets I have I paid cash for and I make sure my bills are no more then 15% of my income each month after taxes, just my 2 cents

We've become a society of instant gratification. I'm pretty grounded: however, I've fallen into the "I need that today" mindset on several occasions. The birth of my son has forever changed how I look at the future. I once just planned for the life of my wife and I on this planet. Now I need to look beyond after we've moved on. This generation has yet to have things "Really Tough" with the exception of 9/11 which was largely a television event for most of America.

As for the Social Security tax...I'm hardly getting a break because it has been known for some time the Social Security safety net will be bankrupt well before our time to collect.

Times change, governments change, people change, all things change. So it cannot be said that even with what we perceive as good evidence that this or that will happen, and that includes the program called "Social Security"
