If you needed to buy an auto for 2 yrs. What would it be?
Max Price: $35K
Target Auto: Space as large as 7-series or X5 (need to haul kids and vacation stuff) and drives like a BMW.

I have a need for a large car/SUV for about 2 years. Love the E70 (currently have an E53) but do not want to buy one new until about 2 years from now.

What would YOU buy to fill the 2 year gap?

exactly, new or CPO 2 year lease, and you'll be WAY under $35k

Are you looking at new or used?

How about another e53 or an e38 7-series if you are looking used?

You are going to take a hit on depreciation if you buy new and sell in 2 years. Like AzX5 said, a lease may be better for you.

Lease, New, or Used. Either one. But won't a 2 year lease be VERY expensive (comparably) because I'd be paying a ton of off-the-lot depreciation costs?

nah, the money factor might not be a bit higher, but you should be ok.

Don't think the 7 has a very big trunk and therefore not sure that it will meet you family hauling needs.

Keep in mind you are allowed 10,000 miles per year of the lease. If you drive a lot, you may want to buy. If you have to buy and you are really only going to have the car for 2 years I would get a used/pre-owned BMW 5 series, 7 series, X5, or X3 for your needs. I love BMW's too much to suggest anything else.

Just buy a good comprehensive extended warranty for the E53 for the next two years - will be cheaper than any lease

Good suggestion; but I'm keeping my E53 and dumping my Volvo XC90.
