I Have Found My Next Car! (And it's not an X5)

It's the E90. I took the X to the dealer today to have the "I think I'll just shut down right here, right now - with no warning" malady (they reprogrammed the DME), and while I was waiting I asked my saleswoman to let me drive an E90. She said "which one?" I said, 330i with sport package and the manual." She found one, and all I can say is wow!

Amazing car! The one I drove had the sport package, premium package, cold weather package and the six-speed. In other words, just the way I'd want it!

Though I am still warming up to its looks, the inside was luxurious, quiet, solid. High-quality materials everywhere with wonderful fit and finish. Oh yeah, that engine. Simply incredible! Smooth, powerful... Great car! I called my wife and told her I had found my next car. After that, she kept calling me every 15 minutes to ensure that I "was coming home" (read -- "you'd better not be buying a new car" lol).

Yeah we drove that car 3 times. I think the salesman may start running when he see's us. But your right it is sweet. It will be the wife's car if she can make up her mind. She keeps thinking about a MBZ C320 ( UGH) I keep tellin her anything less than an E-Class forget it. But I hope she decides on the 330i. Another salesmen has been trying to put us in a 2002 540 for about 34K. But it's got 44K miles on it. A bit to much IMHO. Wish you the best with your decision.

Must be nice to fit into just about any vehicle you want. Best wishes. But I do love my X5. Am used to seeing over most of the traffic and feel a bit claustrofobic(sp?) when riding a car in traffic.

I really liked that 330 6-speed Sport too. It is a great car. I'm not hot on the looks and it would be a little hard to get back into a smaller car like that even though I'm not a big guy. It did feel a little cramped after being in the X5. The other nagging thing would be how good the Infiniti G35 is and the relative bargain it is compared to the 3er. Tough choices in that segment. I'd opt for the 3er in a heartbeat if money weren't a consideration.

I'm still obsessing about my next car. This month's Roundel has a cover story about Dinan's S3 M5. 621 hp!!! I love that E39 M5 and it's stunning in Imola Red.

Well, though not particularly "svelte" (5' 11" 205 lbs.), I am not huge guy. I did not feel cramped in that car at all. The CEO has the X3, and we certainly do not need two SUVs. The wife, of course, says, "You need to start driving your cars until they fall apart." NOT 30 MINUTES later, she shows me a picture of some Waterford crystal she's looking at, and asks me, "which one do you like better?" My response? "the 330i with the sport package and the six-speed."

I'm incorrigible, what can I tell 'ya?

Do you ever wish that you were the type of person who would be happy with any decent driving appliance? The type of person who would be very happy with a new 4cyl Accord or a Camry? The guy who is perfectly content with a car that is sensible and economical? The person who would be overjoyed with a car, any car, so long as it has a sunroof? It certainly would be cheaper and would be one less thing to worry about. I sometimes think about this and think about how much money I'd save if I didn't lust after BMWs and Porsches, and maybe life would be simpler.

Nah, that'd be boring. So back to lusting.

I like the new 545's and the new 7 series a lot....right now the X is seeing some garage time as it gets 18-19mpg while my Z (with all the mods) maintains 25mpg or better.

If the worst thing you do in life is switch cars a lot.....you're doing pretty well.

JK: I'm sorta with you...I like the new 330i and with same options; about 43 list.
They had 1 (One!), new 330i at Fletcher yesterday, (great inventory?!). The swarmy salesguy let me sit in it. No test spin. Said they might have it sold. I asked, "Well, is it sold", and he admitted that it wasn't but a "regular customer" was coming in to look at it and drive it in early afternoon. WTF?! This same clueless sales jerk saw me playing with the info ctr booth and loading up "my 330i". I gave a kudo to the SerDept there, now, but the sales guys are idiots. I mean I am a fooking captive potential customer for 2 1/2 hrs sitting there reading the WSJ, etc. Ya think this guy would chat me up and let me take a fooking test spin? I like the car though and would give it serious consideration when we toss the X. That 30 mpg hwy ain't bad, either.

Doubt I'd buy from those idiots at Fletcher, however. Ya cannot make this stuff up.

See you in October, Juan.

The funny thing is that before I read your last line, I was thinking, "well, yeah, but that'd be boring!" lol

You're right, though, Kevin. And I HAVE often thought about that. A Honda Accord is a GREAT car! Dependable, well-built, will drive for ever, and fully loaded it comes in at 10k less than a 3er. But, well... what fun would that be??

The kids are not going hungry, and we will give them college educations as their inheritance. Mom and dad will travel and buy the finer things in life, so long as we are fortunate enough to do so.

That does sound like an idiot for a dealer. My saleswoman told me I could drive any car on the lot, and asked me to pick.

Yeah, md, looking forward to seeing you and the others in October.
