The trouble is there is actually a LAW that allows them to say ANYTHING without fear of prosecution. It was intended to allow free (& heated) discussion of issues in Congress, but has been mutated to cover anything they say to the public (ie, election promises). I am not a lawyer, but would love to find out its exact wording and how it's been modified over the years (& by whom)

I'd agree with that. The media today looks for no justification for anything and does about zero investigation past the commentary. What is happening, is what you said...backfiring. They are charging down the road of commentary, finding out later the comments are wrong and then BANG you're a liar. Oops. I still think the liberal media can't believe Hillary is losing.
