NASCAR Race Questions

Newbie needs some help for an upcoming race.

I'd like to rent a race scanner to listen in to pit/driver/spotter chatter. Do they rent those at the track? Is there a limited supply?

I'm going to the race in Charlotte over Memorial Day weekend. Any advise on the race or locale?

Yes, they rent them at the speedway. I've never had a problem getting one. Go early, races are great! I used to be a wild NASCAR fan until Dale hit the wall and checked out at Daytona. I've never been to Charlotte. Talladega is awesome if you ever get the chance to go.

Bring binoculars. The track is too big to see all the way around.

I am not a big NASCAR fan but maybe this will help you.

You can rent scanners at the track. I don't know how many they have but try contacting the speedway for info: http://www.lowesmotorspeedway.com/contact/overview/

There are also vendors not affiliated with LMS that rent them, such as TrackScan in the white trailers with the blue/black/yellow logo. I can't remember any of the other names but they aren't hard to find.

I had never been to a NASCAR race until Fourth of July weekend in 2001. I never thought I would be able to get into that form of racing and on my way to the track I had no clue who many of the drivers were or who to root for. Then Dale Jr. dominated the race and won at the first time back to Daytona after the passing of his father. I have to admit, that it still gives me goosebumps and now I am somewhat addicted to watching it and have been a huge Dale Jr. fan from that day on. I will say to anyone who has never been, go to a race and see it in person before you totally dismiss it. The whole experience is pretty fun.

Comfortable clothes and shoes, you will do lots and lots of walking. Baseball hat or visor and sunscreen, you will fry in the stands.

Wait - is Charlotte a night race also? Then skip the sunscreen.

Hope your hotel is booked already. Race week is chaotic in Charlotte... specially up on the northeast side. The roads, hotels, restaurants, and malls just choke with an extra 400k people.
Let me know if you have any questions, need directions, etc. while you are in town.

I never got the go fast turn left thing. Until I was flipping through the channels one Sunday and caught THE racing moment, 4 wide inches away from each other...I was hooked, and that was on TV. Going to a race is a completely different thing. The roar of the engines, the speed.

While at a Dover, which is a lot easier to move around as it is only a mile long, I wound up behind the wall, track level. It was absolutely amazing to see and feel the speed that they travel close up. It was just a woosh and blur of color as they zoomed by.

The superspeedways are a different type of race but just as exciting. I haven't watched a race since Dale died. It's not the same. I still get the goosebumps though.
