I have never had fish before - except for a few goldfish when I was younger that I won at a carnival - so I really don't know anything about fish. I'd like the tank to be on the small side...maybe three or five gallons. I'd like a type that will be fine not getting fed over the weekend...sometimes three days (gotta love those federal holidays!) Do I need a filter? Should I put a live plant in it? Any advice? Can I trust the people at PetSmart to tell me what will work for me?

Yeah just go to PetSmart and they will tell you everything.
You can also get these drops to clean the water, it is very easy. They probably have a feeder timer too or something like that. Good Luck!

I think for that size tank maybe 1 or 2 Betas maybe ok...Pet Smart or an aquarium shop would be your best bet, good luck, and a filter never hurts.

i would suggest neon tetras for fishes. they form clusters when swimming together and they glow. you can get 10 gallon tank and use a undergravel filter and an airpump for filtration. some rocks and a couple of plants should be fine. good luck. remember fish are frineds not food, except when its sushi!

Get a filter, for sure. It's a little noisy but if it's in your office it won't matter.
I had a couple beta fish and a goldfish awhile ago. One of the betas died for some reason, but the goldfish kept growing, so our housekeeper decided that she wanted it and we willingly gave it to her. The beta and the GF could always stand to not be fed for a few days. If it dies, buy another one for $5 or whatever they cost now.

+1 on the filter. A plant and rocks are nice and recommended too, but don't get too many or else it'll be hard to see the fish and they're just another thing to get dirty. You will need to periodically change the water too, like every 7,5k er I mean every month or so. (Depends on various factors)

Yes a good filter and set-up the tank for a week before adding fish.

Thanks, guys! I'll get over to PetSmart one day this week and buy everything (except for the fishies)!
