I tried once, and it looked like useless crap and I gave up. I found it far easier to print maps from maps.google.com and bring them along. Are you planning to use it for locating Starbucks and such? I didn't try that functionality.

When I bought my 4.4i in 2006, it stretched me to the limits (financially). I decided to go with a bare "naked" 4.4i from the factory, and decided to skip the Nav which would have added another $2-$3K to the cost. I figured I could pimp out the 4.4 bit by bit with after-market add-ons, which is what I've been doing.
For the navigation, I've been using VZ Navigator for the past year or so. It's actually quite good! The screen is obviously smaller than most of the dedicated Navis on the market, but it's very versatile and the newest version has traffic re-routing. It talks to you in 1 of 5 voices that you pick, and has the same 2-D and 3-D routing of all the good navi units out there. It hasn't steered me wrong yet.

Cell phone nav systems are always POS. I'm sure the next iPhone's navigation will be better than any Garmin, though...

Not true. The Nav system on my BB8800 was actually VERY good. But I switched over to the iphone.

I used VZ Navigator once. It was pretty decent, although I had trouble connecting since I used it on day three that the system was up. (free trial).

side story: Received a promo email from Onstar last week about using their turn by turn voice navigation.... i responded saying "no thanks, my vette has a navigation system". Onstar knows everything about my car, yet, they ignore it in search of making more money... why would i use onstar when I have the GM nav system?

GM also knew (as early as 2002) they were going to discontinue analog OnStar, yet they decided to install that system anyways in my 2004 Saab.
