Bye Bye Conti's Your history

You had you chance but the third time is enough.

A couple of months ago we are driving down the
Road in the e60 minding our own business when
the flat tire warning light comes on but theres no flat.
We are near a dealer so we pull in and they find
a nail in one of the tires. We get it repaired nearby.
Two hours lost.

A couple of weeks later the light comes back on again.
Same tire patch didn’t hold. We get it fixed.
Another 2 hours lost.

Today on the way home we are driving down the
road in the e60 again minding our own business when
The flat tire warning light comes on again. This time
We really do have a flat and have to pull off the road
Into a shell station. This time it’s not the same tire.

So I give it a look and of course the tire is ruined
because I drove on it off the exit. Ok that’s fine I was on
the freeway during rush hour. It’s not safe to make a tire
change under those conditions anyway. So I unload the trunk
get out the doughnut and the jack, jack up the car
take out the bolts reach and grab the tire and
IT WILL NOT COME OFF.
(Oh did I mention that the wind is blowing about 30MPH
And when I say it’s cold I mean it was cold.)

So I said to my self…. self….
How can this be? So I look and sure enough I
forgot one bolt. Whew. I take it out and grab that wheel
again and it still will not come off.
At this point I say to myself....Self!!!
let’s call BMW road side service. After all here I am in my suit
and tie. This makes no sense. So we make the call.
5 mins turns into 10 minutes. 10 Minutes turns into
20 minutes before someone finally answers.
FINALLY we get someone. They seem nice enough but 45 minutes later
some guy shows up in a 3 series with a locksmith ad
on his hood and his doors. I’m thinking this is a joke. But nope it’s
someone BMW contracted to do tire changes and
jump starts.

He gets his own floor jack from out of
the back seat floor of his car and goes thru the drill
and he can’t get the wheel off either.

Yeah baby I thought to myself even this youngster can't
cut the mustard..... I'm feeling good about myself
right now.

He thinks he's going to use the Jack handle to pry it off
but no way. He finally gets out a small plastic hammer crawls under the
BMW and begins to tap the wheel over and over and over again
from the inside of the wheel until finally the wheel comes off.
Turns out the round ridge that the wheel sits
on was rusted and that’s why the wheel would not come off.

3 hours later and a vow to buy Michelins ASAP, we got home.

In all the years we have had cars we have never had this much
trouble with tires. We have always had Mich's.
So bye bye 28k mile Conti’s your history.....

I guess what really got me though was the fact that I could
not get that wheel off. I mean we used to change tires so fast
even in suits that we use to win bets that we could change
a tire with our best clothes on and not get a speck of dirt on
anything not even our hands. (We always had gloves in the car)
Today I lost that bet with myself. I’m a little disappointed.

OBTW we are thinking of getting Pilot® MXM4® 225/50R17 94V
