Why do we care about CEO salaries?

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,367202,00.html

This is the 4th or 5th time in 6 months I've seen this mentioned and I was just wondering "why we care?". Isn't it up to the stockholder/board members in those companies to care about CEO performance? Why is it really any business of the "nations"?

And why do CEO's feel it is a requirement to donate to Al Sharpton?

Because it suggests a breakdown in corporate governance. Yes, it is up to shareholders, but I don't think we can expect to see this information in the annual information circular. So, it is presented by AP, doing the job of the press. Certainly, variable compensation of CEOs has proven to be somewhat inelastic with respect to corporate performance. It is news now because as the economy turns, pay packages are not following suit.

As to it being the interest of the nation's, perhaps a non-binding vote of shareholders on executive pay packages, as described in the article, would have some effect.

The decision to pay high salaries to these CEO's is in fact not being made by the stockholders. It's kind of like a club. Each of these guys are on the board of directors of a number of other companies, and they all vote to pay eachother these outrageous salaries. You've had cases where some of these companies lost huge amounts of money and are laying off thousands of workers, but instead of just firing the CEO, they offer him a $50 million or $100 million severance package.

There needs to be a law stating that the highest paid full-time worker at a company can only earn a certain percentage higher than the lowest paid full-time worker. So make that amount 50X if you want. I'm certainly not saying that everyone should earn the same. But some of these companies are paying the CEO a few thousand times as much as many of the lower workers get paid, and that is just rediculous. I'm sorry, but no full time job is worth a thousand times as much as another.

Some people care because they in fact are not making that money and they are just plain jealous. If they were getting that money you wouldn't be hearing all that noise....
