20 Million or 50 Million what would you choose

ESPN.com reported this week that an unidentified person close to LeBron James said the Cleveland Cavaliers superstar would consider playing in Europe for $50 million a year when he’s eligible to opt out of his contract after the 2009-10 season.

Weather it's true or not the question is. "Should NBA fear a mass exodus of talent to Europe?

Far-fetched? Impossible? Perhaps, but the steady stream this summer of American players heading to Europe, where the euro dwarfs the dollar, the salary cap doesn’t apply and the game is rapidly improving, has changed the dynamic of player movement in the NBA.

“The European market has been growing year by year and it’s certainly been a hope of ours that it would become a viable alternative for players,” agent Mark Bartelstein said Wednesday. “The luxury tax in the NBA has put a crimp on what teams can spend, so players are looking for alternatives.”

Josh Childress started the trend last month, when the restricted free agent grew tired of Atlanta’s bargaining and signed a three-year deal with Greek club Olympiakos worth about $20 million after taxes. Because the NBA’s collective bargaining agreement only applies to the league’s teams, the Hawks couldn’t match the offer. Atlanta lost its sixth man from last season and got nothing in return.

Maybe not a mass exodus, but yes... David Stearn should be worried. Carlos Arroyo, who played for Orlando for the past few seasons and member of the Pureto Rico National Team, is going to play for a team in Israel.

The game is global.

Is there really that much of a difference between 20mil and 50mil? Once you are at that price point, pretty much anything you want to buy falls under you. It would be fun to live in Europe for a little but though. But actually, if you figure that everything is 2x more expensive there (in UK at least) when you are dealing with USD, your $$ gain is only 5mil.

it is surely not of NBA entertainment production, but from this fan's prospective... the talent is there. The last several years of USA's participation in international play should be proof enough. However, they should win gold this year.

Everything about FIBA rules should favor NBA players from legal goaltending, shorter courts, short 3 point line, etc.

Side bar on article: Emeka Okafor $72 milli for 6 years!?!

There's a lot of difference when you factor in creative tax loopholes, Homes and cars bought and paid for by teams. Anybody who's lived there long enough knows the ropes and never gets caught in the 2x more expensive rope a dope.
