|
Advice/ideas where to stay in Paris and Rome early August?
Looking to spend 5 days in Rome then travel to Paris for 5 days. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

No connections, but I will say that in 2006 we went to Rome and Paris, among other places. In Rome, we thoroughly enjoyed out stay at the Rome Cavalieri Hilton. Did the Executive Floor, and were treated like royalty. In Paris, we stayed in a little B&B that was within walking distance to the Louvre, the Hôtel d'Angleterre on Rue Jacob. Not as swanky, but helpful staff, clean and nice.

Here under are a couple of hotels where I stayed during some recent business trips. There are very nice and well located. Remember though that in Paris downtown hotel rooms are pretty small. Remember also that with the Metro (French subway) you can go anywhere you want quickly and efficiently and it is pretty cheap. It is a known fact that there is no place in Paris downtown further away than 500meters from a metro station. As as long as you stay downtown Paris the metro is safe at almost any time. Watch out for pick-pockets though.
Get a map of the metro with you all the time. If you get lost in Paris go down the nearest metro station and it will get you back home with only ONE ticket whatever number of connections you have to make and as long as you do not get out of the metro. The Hilton is very nice, sits at the bottom of the Eiffel tower and you get a balcony with a beautiful view, the prince de gale isn't bad either, closer to the champs elysees.

Can't help you with Paris, have always tried to avoid it. Apologies to the Paris fans.
Rome, on the other hand, we have loved every time. Best hotel we ever stayed at in Rome, several years back, was the Grand Parco dei Principi. Expensive, but great. http://www.parcodeiprincipi.com/en/main.php We have also stayed near the Termini Station. The other end of the luxury scale, but fun. Lots of restaurants. Recommend you stay away from the US hotel chains in Rome; I have stayed at one of the Marriots but never would again. They tried as hard as they could to mask the Italian experience.

Places to stay in Rome
I heard that it is better to stay away from American Hotel chains since basically they remove or at least "lessen" the italian experience if you go there.
The Italian hotels and apartment villas might be good. If you can dish out the cash. If you're planning on stretching your budget it might be economical to stay in hostels. There are a lot of them and you can just show up there if needed. Vacation apartments are also nice since you can cook your own meal there if you want.
